He's fighting the ring on the end of the axle.. if he can get it in far enough to get the other end in the hub he can thread the nut on till its flush an use a hammer ...

Have you upgraded to the new tensioner? Is the upper chain guide still in the motor?
I have never heard that before and almost sounds like the chain is rubbing on something, like one of the guid...
It's hard to tell if a seal just started to go bad. Check the turbine and compressor housing for oil residue. You could always get a rebuild/seal kit and rehab it but I'm not sure I would bother.
