Tuning My Calum R/T
Good Day all! I am starting a thread to hopefully gain some info and learn some more about tuning my car. Any help, advice or experiences are welcome!

I will be installing my Calum ECU within the next couple of weeks (god willing). Just sourcing out parts right now to make my own "mini" step-down harness. I will be modifying the ECU box and the firewall (slightly) so I can keep the ECU and the adapter harness in the firewall. I was just going to splice in the B14 Harness plug onto my B15 harness, but this car is a DD so I want to make sure I can revert back if there is a problem. Also if I cut off the B15 plug and something happens with the new ECU i would then have to re-splice the B15 plug. No thanks! I don't currently have a back-up B14 ECU. I will source out a G20 ECU for a back-up eventually. I will work on the adapter in my spare time from the comfort of my couch!

With that being said.....I have some questions about tuning my ECU. I am definitely a noob in this department but I am a fast learner and wiiling to learn as well. I have read the "sticky" stuff for tuning. I have Tuner Pro RT. I have the port drivers installed. I have the newer B14RT xdf. and I have what I believe to be a B14 VE bin that matches my car. The bin was for an N60 Maf but I modified it for an E60 MAF using the MAF VQ table posted on this web-site. I have uploaded the bin to the ECU without a problem but I just want to make sure I have a safe bin to start with. I got the bin from the old forum and I believe it to be a genuine Calum B14 VE .bin file.

Here is my set-up:

B15 '01 SE w/ PP
SR20VE w/ stock cams /stock injectors
Old school Hot-shot (DE) 4-2-1 header with 2.75" cat-back (OEM cat)
2.5" AEM CAI
E60 MAF (to be installed when ECU goes in)
VAFC for VVL
Calum R/T V.1 (B14 OBD2)

I will be building a custom header/exhaust hopefully over the winter. N1's or Kelford's to go in over the winter as well. A wideband will be my next purchase, but I do not currently have one.

Goal:

To make sure I have a safe base tune. Anybody willing to look at my bin? How can I post bins here? Or screen shots?

Questions:

1) I want to raise the rev-limiter to 7300 or 7400 RPM to hopefully avoid bouncing off the limiter. I do not like the limiter. I still plan on shifting around 7ish but the tach can't keep up with the VVL so if it is set a bit higher (still safe limit) then maybe I can avoid hitting it when I shift at 7ish?

I have adjusted the limiter, but I want to know about the fuel and timing maps. They all stop at 7200 RPM. So how will the ECU know what map to use above 7200? I see that the "RPM Scale - New Map" section in TunerPro is the only table that reads above 7200 RPM (to 11,250 RPM) but I don't think this is it. Will the ECU just keep the same fuel map and timing maps above 7200 as it uses for 7200??

2) What is the "New Map" section? I understand primary and secondary maps but am confused with this section.

3) Is somebody willing to take a look at my bin and tell me it is a safe base tune to start with? As far as my Noob tuning brain can tell the A/F and timing maps look conservative but solid...My car is a DD so I don't want anything to aggressive.

The best I can do right now is Cell phone pics....

Any help would be greatly appreciated!! I can email my bin if anybody is willing to look at it. Or if somebody can tell me how to attach it....

Thanks so much for any help!

You're right, after 7200 it will just keep the same settings regardless of how high you shift. As for the limiter, set it as high as you're comfortable. If you set it over 7800, it will remove the limiter. I don't have much experience with the other stuff or ve bins so I can't help you there. I've had my ecu for years and still don't know much about it lol.

What's your Ecu part number?

Adding three tunes to this post, I fixed the VQ table for the Maxima VQ (E60) MAF. That MAF seems to have different values everytime I see them. Thus I pulled my values directly from a Maxima Tune.

Just update the RPM to 7500 or lower and you should be fine. Get me the ECU part number though, I can see if each tune is correct for your ECU.

7500 rpm revlimiter should be fine for stock VE cams. I Keep mine lower just to prevent valve float, etc.

About the maps, the ECU interpolates and extrapolates. As in it will calculate timing/fuel amounts between columns/rows and even if you run off the map. It's a good idea to make your map large enough to make sure you don't roll over. When you do roll over you do mainly use the fuel/timing from your last column/row, so do scale your RPM/TP to be slightly above.

Don't touch the New Map, no one knows what it does.

Don't touch it, there are a lot of undefined items, if you don't know what they do the general rule is not to touch it .

Attached is Calum's VE tune, the timing does seem to be a little more aggressive then the one you posted. VE's can handle a good amount of timing though, so you should be fine. Check your spark plugs for knock though and keep your AFR's in check.

I am not sure which number you need. Here is a pic. I believe it is your old v.1 Vadim.

I thought so. Thanks for the input! No 7800 RPM for me...scared of valve float with stock cams/springs. 7400-7500 sounds good I think.

I think I already have your updated VQ table. I remember reading you noticed this difference a while ago.

You wrote a little about this in your tuning sticky. I will read up on how to expand the maps a bit. I think you spoke specifically, if I'm rememering correctly, about adjusting the TP scale beyond what you need. I will read up more on how to make adjustments.

Definitely a more agressive timing map up top. I will look at these some more.

Thanks.

Shucks I removed my old tunes. I think those VE tunes should work fine for you though. If it doesn't run right, then the bin's firmware doesn't match your ecu .
