I can see "Universal Serial Bus controllers", but I see no indication of activity or ports

If you see nothing active, than your computer is not recognizing the Calum or whatever is plugged into the computer. I dunno how to remedy that since i do not own it.

The limited experience I have with plugging my car into a computer is through Nissan DataScan v1.4 and using a Consult plug to USB adapter.

If the unit can be powered by the USB cable directly, then yes you should be hearing the hardware detected sound when plugging it in.

Did it ever pop up as "Installing Device Driver" in the lower right hand corner when you first plugged it in?

no, but you arent supposed to plug it in without installing the driver first.

You installed the drivers from the site that I linked right? There is a good chance they might not work because they are too new now .

When you plugged in the RT ECU did it show up as new hardware available? If it didn't then the USB cable inside the ECU is disconnected (happened to me before).

If it did show new hardware but didn't find the drivers then I will give you the old ones.

No new hardware available. I'll check the USB cable inside the ECU. Thanks!

The USB serial ports are listed in the device manager under "Ports (COM & LPT)", not under "Universal Serial Bus Controllers".

Hows it going Dave? I think you were my instructor at the Savannah convention a couple years ago. I had the rented Mazda 6.
