Nate, Serious Business is something Dan Martin and Ben Fenner started. Sorry for the confusion.
Anyway, we're willing to help you out for real cheap. If you bring the transmission to us we'll teach you how to do it for free. Maybe the cost of some root beer.
It sounds like you're not going to be able to do that though, and you'll be driving the car down and we'll have to spend the afternoon working on the car. We're willing to lend you the tools and do as much work as you'd like us to, or show you how to do the work, for $100. That's about 1/3 the price of a typical clutch job. We want to help you out so we're not going to try to make any real money on the project. We also realize you have to pay for fuel each way.
Also, regardless of what you do I'd like to give you some advice about what you really need to buy when fixing 5th gear pop-out and what you can go without. I'd say definitely don't spend all the money to get the entire kit. There's a lot of stuff in it you don't need. Some of it's nice to have, but truly you only need one part. That one part in the new
5th gear itself (for the input shaft).
You'll probably want a new 5th gear synchro as well, and I would highly recommend that.
You'll probably want a new 5th gear selector collar but this isn't entirely necessary as your current one can be "flipped around" and you can use the other side of it (assuming it hasn't been "flipped" in the past).
And now that I think about it, I have a known good one sitting on my desk at work as a paper weight if we really have to replace yours.
You'll probably want new axle seals but they aren't 100% mandatory.
You don't need a new 5th gear selector fork unless you've been slamming the car into 5th extremely hard and/or holding it into 5th with the force of 2 strong men.
You don't really need any new C-clips or O-rings or random other things that come with the kit. The kit comes with a new reverse switch and neutral switch... Seriously, totally pointless unless yours are leaking or broken. The "kit" was put together many, many years ago before the true problem was known and everything 5th gear touched got replaced. The guy who ordered the first kit made it up on the spot and threw in a bunch of other stuff he wanted to buy and replace "while he was in there". I've spoken to him personally, and he's amused at how all these years later the "kit" includes all this extra stuff.
You will want to think about things you might want to do while it's out though. Maybe you want to replace your throw out bearing? I dunno, it's up to you.
Cheapest thing to do would be to just get the new 5th gear, and a new 5th gear synchro and re-use everything else. Truthfully, you'll be fine and I'm just thinking about stretching your college budget. If it were me, I'd replace some other stuff, but that's all fluff.
Let me know what you think about the $100 offer and when you go to order the stuff I recommend ordering from Greg V. at G-Spec. He has a
website,
a section of our forum where you can reach him, or you can e-mail him. I always just call my orders in to his phone number. Here's his contact info:
