So, no, it is not illegal to remove your front orange reflectors/sidemarkers in California, they are NOT required on cars.

Drove the car with the sidemarkers tinted & I never got questioned about it, but I did get pulled over 3 times after I re-badged it with the Nissan Primera badges. Theres a local guy from the IE that color matched his sidemarkers & he said he's never been questioned either.
