As long as you have the needles relatively close to what you had before, you shouldn't be off too much.

I actually installed that cluster for a while the way it was after the "experiment." Everything worked perfectly. I hate having to line up the speedo needle after taking it off. It is kindof a pain sometimes. Still possible, though. How do you install different faces without taking off the needles? The holes in the faces are too small to go around the needles. To align the needles properly, I actually installed the cluster with the clear cover off and took the needles off while the cluster was in the car. It saved a bunch of time.

making the hole bigger is what i would do ..or maybe a thin slice to squeeze it in

Nah, just take out the black caps on the needle and the faces will slide right in.

update: I have a new NX for this project. The only problem is that it's a 93 with the electronic speedo. I'm going to need another cluster now. Well, I guess I'll get back on this.
