Letter to the new folks concerning our "Convention"
Welcome to the forum!

I just wanted to take moment and explain to the new folks on the forum about our annual meet. We call it "The Convention". I remember when I first started lurking around on the old forum, some 10+ years ago, seeing posts about "The Convention" and not really knowing what it was. I had been involved in some other online car forums previously, but none of them had anything that they called a "Convention". No one really expalined in detail what is really was. At that time, it was almost treated like a secret society. It took a few years and reading many threads on the old forum, to realize I needed to attend one. I'm sorry I didn't start attending way back in the early days. Hence, me starting this thread to give the new folks, and maybe even some of the not so new folks, some insight and some motivation to attend.

I'm not really sure who came up with the name. Originally the "Convention" was created by the founding members of SERCA (SE-R Club of America). I'm sure it was one of the original guys that coined the name. It is now run by members of this forum, which still include a lot of the OG guys from back in the SERCA days. This year's convention is being chaired by Madtec (Ralph), in addition to, a whole bunch of other people who will be volunteering their time to make it a success.

What is the Convention? Well, it just the best damn meet you'll find for SR20 powered cars, period! No...really. The real essense of our Convention is hard to put into words. It's a national meet, which means people from all parts of the US (maybe Canada and Mexico?), and from all walks of life, come together and celebrate our hobby (cars, with a focus on the SR20 powered ones). It's an event based meet with a focus on tracking and showing our cars. It's also a gathering/reunion of people who have a common interest. That interest crosses many cultural boundaries. It's a very diverse group of people. Old, young, somewhere in between. Black, white, latino, asian, somewhere in between. Men, women. Gay, straight, somewhere in between. Christian, Jewish, Muslim, athesists etc etc. It's a meet people look forward to.

As a lot of us age, it's becoming a nostalgic meet. You'll see a lot of OG guys remembering the old days. It's a meet where if you need help with your car you'll have 10 people jumping at the chance to help you. Some of these people know these cars better than the Nissan engineers who built them. It's an event where you'll meet people for the first time that you've know for a while on the forum. It's a meet where you're accepted for modding a $1000 car and not be laughed at (okay, maybe just a little by the hotel staff...lol). Like I said, it's hard to put into words. I can say this though, if you're at all interested in cars and you like the SR20 series motor, you'll be in hog heaven at the Convention.

I think Meeners thread from 2012 does a nice job of touching upon why you need to attend. Please read here: http://www.sr20-forum.com/2012-national-convention-independence-oh-june-1-3/58672-convention-passion.html

Enough of the sappy stuff. The next Convention will be 6/17/2015 thru 6/21/2015 in the Winchester VA area. Here is the forum section for this year's convention: http://www.sr20-forum.com/2015-national-convention-winchester-va-june-17-21/

If you have any Convention related questions and are a little shy asking them in the Convention section, feel free to ask them here. I'm viewing this as a "flame proof zone"....lol

Hopefully, I'll see you at this year's Convention!

-Hank

Look through last year's picture threads in the convention section. Now imagine after all the pictures are posted for this year's convention you know all of the stories and faces that go with them. Much better than looking at pictures and having regrets you didn't attend when you really could have.

80% of life is just showing up...the other 20% you figure out as you go. Trust me, the older I get the more I realize you have to get on with life while you're still here. There may not be a next year. Word from the old guy.

Great Post Hank.It seems like Ohio was yesterday, and I can wait to do it again!!! Woot.
I have thoroughly enjoyed meeting and hanging out with you at the last couple conventions.(as well as everyone else)
I hope you will have at least a little time to instruct me on the roadcourse, too. You can drive my nx and remember why you should have never sold those 2 beautiful white ones you had back in the day.
I too, wish I had been going for many years.I hope to go to as many as possible if we can keep them going.

To anyone thinking that they wont go because they have no car to bring,or its not ready,or its too far....DONT LET THAT STOP YOU.
I had to fly to the last 2 ,and still had a great time.many folks were gracious enough to let me tag along to events and ride shotgun at the track.
Actually, its kinda cool to get to ride in different setups.
On the roadcourse in Ohio,I rode in ...
-Hanks basically stock SE-L(his best mod is the driver)
-Blair took me out in his track classic SE-R DE bolted with C2 cams that sound wicked. He knoew the track so good,it was like a sunday drive.
-Chriscar,with his sleeper Boosted classic,Nismo LSD...provided a fun ride,even in the rain.
-Then there was wnwright,in his supercharged Miata, who I was calling "tankslapper" due to the drifts and saves he pulled off with me in the passenger seat. ,lap after lap.

I also got to drive Happynoles super-fucking-cool P10...not to mention getting to get a close up look at cars that I have seen being built online over the years.

If you have the means, rent a car and bring your helmet. Worse case, you might be able to snag a shotgun seat, as eggman mentioned. Pack a helmet, if you have one. Even if you're just spectating, it's worth the trip.

If you're down on funds and won't be renting a car, I suggest making arrangements ahead of time with someone to tag along with. There's more than likely someone you can bum a ride from at the spur of the moment, but nothing is guaranteed. Keep in mind, the organized events are a good distance away from the hotel. There still is a lot that goes on at the hotel itself, though.

If you're totally new to the community and don't know anybody, I would suggest you use the "meet and greet" as a way to figure out what things you'd like to do outside of the 3 organized events. It's a good time to get peoples' contact info so you can keep in touch and know when people are leaving for different things like dinner, clubs/bars, etc.

Mr. Slapperson to the new kids.

You rode my first session out too, before I built up confidence... I took Ashton for a little plow ride on my only 4 wheel off ever (the grass that I cut with my sub frame fell off and caught fire on drive back somewhere in Arkansas). Memories for a lifetime. Passing BenFen on the outgoing lap. Not a single F was given to warm tires up that day.

That corner work was cool as hell (see him giving thumbs up on lap 3). Later in the day he ran for cover a few times on some of the more epic 4 wheel drifts.
