According to the chart, I will be well below the limit. Seriously tho, the amp is going to be maybe 3 feet away from the distribution block, probably closer to 1-2 feet (which then goes to the battery in the trunk through a 0ga wire).

Either way, 8ga should be fine, but I might just use the 4ga since I have plenty of it laying around.

Going bigger won't hurt. Smaller is what you have to worry about. Good luck.

If you have plenty of 4 gauge laying around go with that. It will be better and leave you some headroom if you ever upgrade the amp.

you want the fuse to blow before the wire heats up.. what is the maximum drain?

RMS is just the "normal" output of the amp.. You need to have wire that can handle the maximum output of the amp without heat issues.

In telecommunications we call the maximum drain "list 2" drain.. probably the same with all electrical devices. I haven't installed an amp since I started engineering though..

The funny thing i see about all this is that i ran a 12 gauge setup threw my whole setup and i haven't seen a difference. And im running a 1200 watt sony explode amp with a 10 inch kicker and a 12 inch alumapro band pass box and it sounds like a damn concert in my car.

because sony are junk amps. that 1200w is peak value. the rms or continuous value is waaay lower.

it's all fun and games until your ride catches fire.. LoL

really though, a "1200 watt" amplifier doesn't always put out 1200 watts...

i'd like to see an ammeter on your system. You're probably not pulling more than 15-20 amps...

the clue's should have been "Kicker" and "Sony Xplode".... I can't believe I solicited a response...

that article loves up on the old Nacamichi amps, as well as Alpine. I had a 3527S amplifier that I put in 4 different cars over a span of 12 years before giving it away to Will at the 2005 Convention.. I always wonder if that thing is still running strong....
