It really depends on the abuse of the motor and how well it runs. On race engines or engines that are heavily abused, no more than 3k miles and thats using synthetic. On normal DD cars, you can go 5-7k miles on synthetic oil with no issues. My intervals on our MDX is roughly 6-7k miles. The maintenance light doesnt even come on until 7k miles after being reset. Its suggested oil is synthetic and Ive always used synthetic. I always do the changes between 5-7k miles. My wife has gone a little over 8k miles between a change before and it was fine.

When I DD'd my car, i would change the oil every 1500-2000 miles and running synthetic. But I always abused my engine, always raced it, and so on.
If you use conventional oil, no more than 4-5k miles but preferably every 3k. Oils today are highly more advanced then they were even 10 years ago. Most manufacturers especially ones that require or suggest synthetic recommend 7500-8k mile oil changes. Because you can do that on newer engines and it will be just fine.
