Resurfaced Flywheels
Prior to my shit clutch install, I just got my flywheel resurfaced. I was thinking about this last night as to why my brand new clutch might of been slipping and came up with this as a possibility. When you get the flywheel resurfaced should it be just as smooth as a milled surface or is the rough surface ok? You could see the machining marks from where it was shaved down The marks look like mini crescent moons. I have no pics unfortunately.

Machine marks in the flywheel after surface grinding are normal and fine.

ok so this is normal after a resurface.

Yes it is. The way they resurface it is by using a circle stone which is why you see the marks look like that

did they leave the step in it when they resurfaced it?

I am not sure what you mean. I did not see anything he was doing. The only thing I remember him doing was removing the pressure plate pins and bolts before the resurface.

There is a 20 thou step (i think, been a long time since i measured one) in the friction surface from the factory which probably contributes to the long life of the OEM clutch. Never seen a machine shop (at least over here) re-create that when they've machined a flywheel, because of how its done using a large surface grinding machine, there isn't really a facility to be able to do that without a second pass perhaps on the outside edge? That's all time and money though.

look at the edge of the friction surface...it should be very slightly raised from the outer area of the flywheel. On sr20's I've only ever got two resurfaces before the can't be done anymore

I'm pretty sure its .007" step

Do you guys think this "step" on the flywheel if shaved down with the resurface would affect the way that clutch grabs?
