You know, I just realized, my Dad has been a machinist for over 35 years. What if I get some blank rotors from Advanced Auto and have him slot them for me? I could show him a picture and have identical rotors in 30 minutes lol.

Why do you say drilled is bad and to only get slotted?

Not a great idea but it's not unsafe. You'll just have less brake force applied to the rear discs than would be optimal.

He's going to have the proper rear rotors for you without need for re-drilling the holes. Those are worth it. Does that price include the slotting? Because he sends them off to a machinist to have the blanks slotted and that costs some money. I do think $400 is maybe a little high for slotted rotors. You can talk to him on the phone and see why they cost so much. He may realize they are too expensive and drop the price for you (and everyone else). He's done that plenty of times.

If you want to go with blank rotors, they should be much cheaper. You can get great deals elsewhere like here: Import Replacement Parts

Keep in mind it's extremely hard to get the proper front and rear rotors for this upgrade. Most places will give you the wrong rotors. No way will eBay sellers get it right.

You're not going to find these rotors cheap from eBay. You'll get delivered the wrong stuff 95% of the time.

That would be a great idea, but if I were you I'd get the correct front rotors from here: Import Replacement Parts

Get the Brembo blanks.

Advanced Auto is not gunna get you the right rotors (or calipers) unless you are the luckiest guy on Earth. Same with the rear rotors in 4 x 100. They are from a JDM vehicle I believe and hard to come by. You could get the Maxima ones though from the site above and get them re-drilled by your father to 4 x 100. That would be your cheapest option for rotors maybe.

Seriously. Talk to Greg on the phone and get a real quote from him. The website might not have the current prices, and if you think the price is way high (compared to other OEM quality rotors, not Chinese eBay shit) then let him know and he might make a deal.

I think that's exactly what I'm gonna do. Before I actually go buy anything I'll have to talk with him to make sure he can do it, but I'm pretty sure he can. One more thing, if I do have him slot the rotors and re-drill them to 4x100 for me, can that cause the rotor to have hot spots, heat unevenly and warp?

No, if done properly (not hard to do) the slotting process won't hinder the performance in any way. Nor will re-drilling the rotors for 4 x 100 cause any issues.

Your father will probably find it best to make the slots about 1.0-1.5mm deep and have them continue from the center of the rotor all the way to the absolute edge of the rotor without leaving any material left on the edge. The slot should be viewable while looking at the rotor from the side (ventilation vanes visible) if you know what I mean. However, really there is no wrong way to do slots other than making them too shallow, too deep, or by putting in way too many slots.

Edit: Oh yah, you'll want the bit to create a rounded "U" shape to the deep end of the slot. You won't want any 90 degree angles or anything.

Awesome. I'm not exactly sure how he will do it, but both the slotting and re-drilling will probably be done on his drill press. I just noticed the slotting on some rotors are different. Some go all the way to the outer edge of the rotor, and some are more centered in the friction surface and don't touch the edge. Which one is better? Two examples:
POWER SLOT SLOTTED SPORT BRAKE ROTORS - REAR - eBay (item 130474389622 end time Feb-10-11 20:06:51 PST)

Slotted Rotors I30/35,Maxima, A32 95-99, A33 2000-2003 Rear, Rotors are manufactured to the highest tolerances keeping SAFETY and quality our number one priority. Slotting, unlike drilling, doesn't compromise the structural integrity of the rotor. **

Also, both of those claim to be Power Slot brand.

Personally, I like the slots that go all the way to the edge. However, there is likely very little actual difference in performance either way. The slots on my front rotors go to the edge, the slots Greg did on my rear rotors don't go all the way to the edge. It's really not much of a difference at all. Not worth arguing over.

For me, I think the slots that go all the way probably evacuate better, and possibly allow the rotor to deal with heat expansion better. The slots that don't go all the way may benefit from the lack of stress risers, but that's not an issue as slots really don't cause any cracking to speak of. Again, the differences would be extremely minor.

Power Slot is the brand of the blank rotor used. The slotting may be done in-house for some of those by Power Slot themselves, or it could be contracted out as is usually the case with Greg's rotors. There's many reasons two Power Slot rotors may be different in the details. Also the pictures on Greg's site might not show EXACTLY what you're going to get. Call him to clarify any details.

Alright, well thank you. I think I've got what I need and my Dad should be able to use this information to his advantage. I'm going to get the Brembo rotors off that website - NX2k fronts and Maxima rears. Then I'll have my Dad slot all 4 rotors, and re-drill the rears 4x100. Then I'll get calipers and brackets and fluid and EBC Red Stuff pads and begin the fun. :]

Thanks again

No problem, sounds like a good plan. Oh, I didn't realize they offered slotted Brembos from that site. You will save a whole lot of hassle going with those!
However I'm having hard time seeing any difference in the part number for the slotted versus non-slotted Brembo rotors. There's not much indication that you'll be getting slotted rotors on the site. I'm betting they don't have any available since they are all labeled "OE replacement".

If you're in love with the drilled "look", you could also maybe go with the EBC slotted and dimpled rotors. But they are quite expensive. FYI: Dimples don't cause any of the problems drilled holes do.

Can anyone confirm which NX2k rotor will get him the proper stuff delivered?

I'm not sure if #1 or #3 is the one to buy. I know #2 is likely not the right part. That's going to be the SE-R rotor. Don't get that one.
#1 might also be for the SE-R as well? I don't know. #3 I think it the best bet, even if you don't have ABS. Right guys?
