Thread: Strut mount bolts too short....solution?

My Classic is running again.....and the Cusco bar is finally installed (I bought the bar two years ago :rofl and the damn strut mount bolts are too short.

I have searched under "cusco+strut+bolt" and "strut+mount+bolt" and every other combination I can think of, both here and on the other SR20 forum. No luck.

I also looked through Happynoles Cusco Group Buy thread. Every post. Although I am damn sure not reading every post in every closed Cusco GB thread. We are on GB #8, with a billion posts per thread. Besides, that would have still come up in my search effort. I think.

Obviously there is a solution to this issue, Joe (Happynole) has sold about a gazillion of these FSTB's. However, I cannot find the damn solution and am getting frustrated.

That looks unacceptable to me. Further, my mechanic (Mike) asserts that those short bolts are pretty iffy, and does not allow the lock nuts to properly secure themselves. However, he does not have a solution off the top of his head.

Is this so easy to fix that no one has asked about it before? .....

My mechanical ignorance knows no boundaries.

Call Tien and ask for 6 new studs for the B13 coilovers. These studs are about 1/2 inch or so longer than the stock studs. They fit perfect for me.

you can press out the studs on the plate and put in new ones.

No wonder no one asked the question before. ......

Is there a "grade of hardware" necessary? Aren't bolts and whatnot rated as being "X tough" based on their strength? Uh..ie...a "grade 8" bolt is stronger than a "grade 5". Are some super-strong bolts necessary? Do you recall the exact size bolts used? Or should I measure, test and guess?

I am probably going to call Tien in the next several minutes. However, it would be helpful to know if you have the bolt details off the top of your head.

AHA! I am not the only one that has run into this issue.

I figured I could not be the first person to install a Cusco bar, look at those bolts, and start mentally cussing.

I'll get off-line and get to errands, phone-calls, and the usual day-off bullsh*t. Including calling Tien.

5 of mine fit exact flush.
1 half the nut is on.
I'm really not worried about it. But I wouldn't mind getting longer bolts when I remove front suspension next month.

That's how mine looks. Been like that for years.

Mine are all below flush. Not good. They're "grabbing" but there just ain't enough thread there.

"That would be the SS Kit w/out the upper mounts. Which comes with a variety of different bolts. Can you get the part number from the guy who bought them from us?"

Just left a message at GSpec, GregV may know the exact bolt answer. I also need to ask him about B13 brake boosters.....

Futher, I just talked to my mechanic Mike.

Mike is not comfortable with that amount of "grab." He is also concerned with the replacement bolts strength and design. He has pressed out old strut bolts before, no problems. But he was just replacing the bolt with a new factory item. Not an unknown "longer than factory item, but with the same head characteristics." Therefore, he has no real way to order a set of bolts without trial and error. Bah again.


Why is that whenever you modify anything, you have to modify the parts attatched to the original modification, which in turn requires more modifications, in order for anything to work right? .....
