Yeah that sounds about right. Im sure there were some companies trying to sell them for over 2k but yeah thats about right. Im sure Miko was one of the first to get his hands on a VE so again maybe he can chime in on what they used to cost when he first could get them.

You are all right about the VEs but this is how you see things now.
I don't think there are many people who will start building a DE from the bottom line to 160-170whp nowadays. In my case, I started 4 years ago. Modification after modification, 4 years of building an engine which should have taken me few months only. I wish I had the proper knowledge back in the time so I could go with the VE as well, instead of taking the long (and expensive) way building the DE.

I may have the cheapest 160whp DE build but certainly not one of the longest. (only 7 years plus)

Good numbers Chris. Im not engine builder or tuner by any means but ive got a spare de block that will get some love one day. I leave my car as close to stock as possible and i would like to keep it de. Honestly i like the power my car makes now with just some timing changes, stillen wai, stillen exaust and thats about it. So a de making 160 ish would tickle me. Glad to see i have something to shoot for de all the way for me

Jagy, I have a graph of a cammed 10:1 DE here; http://www.sr20-forum.com/vvl/16344-dyno-trip.html

I may have you beat Viprdude, granted it was a 10:1 and I didn't know it at the time. My brother took off the head to slap on a VE and surprise it was a 10:1 motor.
