Notching SR16's...
So I wanna give a crack at it since I need my car running asap. What have you guys used to notch the skirt of the piston to clear the oil squirter? My boy recommended using a carbide tip instead of something like a grinder. I was thinking of doing it slowly with a dremel. Just finished swapping over the pistons onto the 20ve rods. I was going to just use the 20ve piston as a guide. Any input is appreciated. Thanks!

carbide burr should do if you got a steady hand! Good luck

I used a dremel with the adapter that uses sandrolls. Perfect size and shape, almost mistake free. Gl I also cut shaved 1mm of the top off piston since I am running pump gas and a/c in 90+ degree weather, and took timing of the table about 4 degrees. So far everything good.

I am going to give it a shot in the morning. I figure i'll clean them up and hopefully get the ring orientation proper. I would love to hear it running tomorrow night or Wednesday. Thanks for the input guys. I'm going to run them straight up and run my old tune for the time being. Hopefully it won't be too off since the setup has little changes.

i would take some timing out of the map to be safe..

Yeah Jamie spent some time on the dyno with my old tune. I forget where peak timing was but I know he said it was a couple degrees less than what he ran on his high comp motor. I would like to see 22Xwhp between these pistons, the 4-1 header, and hopefully intake manifold a little later this season. I just miss 9k. I need n1 cams.

I would say go for a 88mm build. I decided to go this route since I had the pistons, new rings, and bearings sitting around along with headgasket. I spun a bearing and scored the crank so ripped apart this other bottom end and trying to make a fun little street setup. I would do the 88mm setup but I really gotta go easy spending a lot on the car this summer haha.

yea i would like to bore a motor out, but i dont think i'll ever have that much spare cash.. maybe one ay i can talk some friends into pitching in maybe.. but for now i can get some new pistons pretty cheap from greg

Numbers do not lie and even when going 88mm should be better I think that taking 1mm off of the pistons and running them at stock 86mm would be a nice gain over 10.3:1 OEM pistons.

Listen to this guys, you will definetely need to pull the timing specially if running pump gas and if you don't take any material other than the lower notch for the squirters.
