I have seen SR16VE pistons run in a SR20VE. They could not run with pinging hard in 93 octane pump gas. This would happen betwwen 2000-5500 RPMs.
We got the pinging to go away with 97.5 octane fuel which was 4 gallons of 93 octane and 1 gallon C16. The car ran great and was very responsive. Never got a chance to put it on the dyno.
I was the one who came up with cutting the top off the piston. I took a set of pistons and cut them off in 1mm incraments for molds to make pistons. That never cam through as I could not get enough people to get some pistons made.
After doing some testing with a VE, I can say 12.5 to 1 can be had on pump gas. If you want to keep it a little safe run 95 octane. That would be 9 gallons 93 octane and 1 gallon C16.
I think 12.5 to 1 is doable without putting to much strain on the motor and your wallet.
