I have heard some bad starters. They do sound like a queel/sneeze.

Especially when cold.

The slow cranking is the biggest problem to tackle IMO. If it's just a drained battery, then charge it up and make sure things are working right. If it is still slow it's entirely possible that your lack of grounding is causing it or making it worse. get that fixed.
Once you get healthy cranking then work on the rest?

Do everything these guys tell you. If everything checks out, pull the plugs, put a wrench on the crank pulley and spin the motor over by hand. If it's very hard to turn or wont turn at all....bad news.
