Stock rev limit; what is it?
I know the redline is at 7,500 rpms, but when does the factory rev limit kick in? Is it 7,600 or 7,700 or something else? I ask because I'd like to make it the same as it was factory and I just can't remember... =/

IIRC it was 7600 on my '92.

Sounds good enough to me.

i know a lot of guys judge by there tach and think that they are reving a stock motor/ecu past 7500. but the stock revlimit on a highport is 7.5k, even though some of our tachs are off by a lot. i know my car looked to rev to 7800 when it was stock...

I agree with Cory. I just double checked the OEM bin that I pulled from my 1991 SE-R and the fuel cut is set for 7500 RPM. My tach also reads about 7800 when the fuel cuts.

None of the above! On 91-93 ecus the 'rev limit' is set to 7500 rpm, but the ecu actually begins to cut fuel at 7300. It cuts the fuel in a staged fashion, dropping one cylinder at a time, and the final step is at 7500 it totally cuts fuel.

Want to see of a video of how it works? When I get back from vacation (Jan 6th) I'll post it.

The stock tach is horrible.

Hey Calum, is that what's known as a soft rev limit?

Thanks for all the good info people. This brings up a question I've always had. I figured spark-cut-based rev limits were safer than fuel-cut-based. The thinking is, if you keep your foot in it after hitting the limit, cutting fuel could produce a lean condition at high rpms and high load. This sounds like a recipe for disaster to me. Cutting spark may dump fuel into the cylinders and catalytic converter, but at least it wouldn't be potentially catastrophic. Am I on the right path?

I wonder because I think I have the option of either style of rev limit on my ECU.

That's what I was doing the one time I hit the limiter. It climbed to 7600 on the tach, got quiet, and gradually wound down from there until I lifted out of the gas. No catastrophe or drama.
