Crank pulley marks lie to me!
Okay, have a GA16DE I'm having some trouble with.

Just did a headgasket, and have problem with the timing. I verified true TDC with a screwdriver, cam timing checks out like it should. The crank pulley however, doesn't line up like it should:

True TDC is at the normal 15deg. I removed the pulley, believing it has separated, but my spare ga16 pulley is the same.

Can I paint additional marks on the pulley to get my timing set right? Why does this even happen?

you do realize that the intake cam timing changes right? VCT. Trust the marks, they are right.

Have you confirmed 16 links between the silver 'mating mark' links on the timing chain? Knock pin on the I-cam is just below 9 o'clock and the E-cam knock pin is at 12 o'clock? Mating mark on the larger sprocket is aligned w/the silver mating mark on the lower timing chain?

That's all I got (per FSM)...

This is an EDM GA16DE. No VCT here.

Yessir! 16 links, I-cam just below 9, E-cam at 12.

Car runs shitty if you time it to 10* with the crankpulley marks. If you time it outside the marks, it runs better?! This makes me believe that I should not trust the marks on the pulley

link to FSM that covers GA16 as well

Index of /manuals/Sentra

but seriously... ga16de AND no vct? just attach a chain to it and use it as a boat anchor.

if its anything like the SR pulley, the center of the rubber piece gets old and the outer section shifts.

This. Think of it as a warning- eventually the pulley will completely separate when your near WOT and fly off the car, happened to me

I have had a VE balancer separate also, but Daniel said his lines up with another GA16 balancer. Unless both are spun the exact same distance (probably not)
