Ask a few "known" members on here and they will probably say the same thing.

But I agree with everything else Shawn has said

OK. Is that the latest consensus amongst you tranny-destroyers?

I do know that the Redline GL4 is good stuff. GL4 correct? The GL5 corrodes the brass synchros or something like that (?).

Yeah anything nearing 300whp you should try using some Valvoline 85w140 either in conventional or Durablend. Either or will greatly greatly help extend the life of the trans. I myself used it when I had the 5 speed and now on the 6 speed trans. After putting it in my trans at 450whp daily and 550whp roughly on race gas lasted 9+ months and is still being used in another 350whp+ se-r. Before that using 75w90 I broke 3 gearstacks in 3 months. So just goes to show you the difference. You really shouldnt be breaking trans at 275whp but it happens especially if the trans was original and 200k miles.

The 6 speed is a great swap if you have the funds. On a base setup your looking at roughly 2000-2500 for the complete swap.

P11 and B15 trans usually go for anywhere from 600-1100 bucks from what ive seen depending on mileage and condition.

You can do one of two things when swapping to a p11 or b15 trans, convert your car to hydro (best option as you will never have to worry about cables and the clutch actuation is sooo much smoother and lighter) or install the cable clutch lever into the b15/p11 trans (easier step and free since you have the b13 trans.

Either way you look at it the P11/b15 trans is slightly stronger mainly due to the shaft design and use of two bearings on the ends of the shaft instead of just one. Also slightly stronger case to help prevent gear separation. The gears on the p11/b15 trans are only slightly more durable than the b13/b14 trans.

No matter what you go with I still recommend to use the Valvoline 85w140 or at least a 50/50 mix of it with 75w90 of the same brand if you live in a sub freezing environment in the winters as when cold the 85w140 is very very thick and will actually bog down the engine in neutral until it warms up. However it does warm up quickly and usually within a block or so of driving shift feel will be much better and the bogging in neutral will dissapear.

Ive yet to break a trans while on that gear oil and many many others on here in the 400+whp range that switched to it have yet to break their b13/b14/p11/b15 trans. Its good stuff.

Shawn, the Valvoline 85w140 in both conventional and Durablend is both GL4 and GL5 rated so no issues. And syncro deterioration from using a gl5 oil would take years and years of use. Probably longer than the trans will last anyways. lol.

Shawn, supposedly GL5 is very corrosive when it comes to brass (which the syncros are made out of). However, I am not certain of the time frame in regards to how long it takes to corrode the brass in our transmission.

The Redline GL4 stuff is very good, especially if mixed with heavy shockproof. But, I have recently developed a few transmission noises from using only MT90 and heavy shockproof. I have since moved on to Valvoline synthetic 85W 140 transmission fluid with LSD additive have since not looked back (the issues occurred on a 98 B14 NON LSD gearbox).

A B15 box is in the works.

NOTE: I got the idea of 85W 140 from both Ashtons writeups and Geo in Florida (and Ashton beat me to the punch )

Valvoline/1 qt. 85W-140 Durablend gear oil (281) | | AutoZone.com

Amazon.com: Valvoline vv824 SAE 85W140 High Performance Gear Oil, 1 Gallon: Automotive@@AMEPARAM@@http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/314YLjXI%2BVL.@@AMEPARAM@@314YLjXI%2BVL

Its also on Valvolines website somewhere. I know Vadim found the page with all the oil specs and posted it in a thread but I couldnt find it.

Anyways, there you go. GL-4, GL-5, and MT-1 rated for both the conventional and Durablend. I usually used the conventional mainly because the autozone didnt stock the durablend version. But I think as long as i can find it locally in Texas now that Ill be using the Durablend. Synthetics are always nice to use on our trannies and help out the LSD's.

Ashton is going to end up with carpel tunnel from all the detailed stories about breaking transmissions and which gear oil to use. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure the newbs appreciate the help but I think that I have heard a version of your transmission/ gear oil novel over 50 times, no lie. Along with all the other stuff that is repeated over and over. All the info the op needed is able to be found by using the search button. It seems we are calmer in our older years, lol. It used to be a one word answer.... "search"
Ashton- The comments I made are all in good fun... You are very helpful when people need it and I can tell you have the passion for the game, especially since you can even write it over and over and over... Had to do it one last time. If it were me I would save it as text and copy and paste when people ask similar questions or just write "search"
haha

Lol, Yeah i know, I searched Valvoline 85w-140 and the sheer amount of topics that have come up with that info, what transmission to use, how much can our transmissions hold, what type of gear oil do you use, what type of gear oil should I use, and so on was crazy. Didnt realize just how many times I had talked about this subject till I actually searched it.

A subject like this that cant be found in the information section, how to's, or isnt stickied i have no problem answering over and over as long as its not on the 1st page of the freakin section. But yeah subjects that are common and posted all over, stickied, in the information library and so on. SEARCH!!!!
