Thread: Dizzy position and timing ?

Every car I time looks to have 15* base timing and the dizzy is about in the middle of the adjustment. But mine is not. I am just curious if anyone else has this issue or if it is just me. I time my car to 15* base and it looks like 17-18 or so on other cars. I have gone through 2 Gspec pulleys, one for the VE and one for the GTiR and both give the same results as far as dizzy placement goes and the 15* mark on the pulley.

I have had the block and head resurfaced, but very lil was removed. Maybe .020" max, and I know that can make a difference, but I am just not sure how much diff it is.

It would be nice to know if the pulley marks are wrong and I am running too aggressive on timing. Greg says the pulleys are marked 0, 5, 10, 13, 15, 17, or something like that. The stock pulley is marked -5, 0, 5, 10, 15, 17???

i thought there was a thread saying the timing marks were off on the g spec pulley

you can easily find the 0 mark on whatever pulley by sticking a long screwdriver through the #1 spark plug hole to find TDC. anyhow, my ve-t setup was the same, 15° on the sr20de distributor "looked" to be way advanced. i also had my head and block resurfaced. stock crank pulley.

Can't you just take the distributor and moving back while not in Set Timing mode, and it ECU should adjust the timing to still stay at 15*?

I remember I had the same problem on my car, my timing was at 11* because of bad knock sensor, so to get it to 15* I had to put it in about 19* position on the distro hehe.

ya, but when you change the base timing off the dizzy the computer doesn't know that you advanced it. The computer just does what it was programmed to do, but it cant read when you change the timing.

But ya, My car looks way advanced. I thought it was maybe the Gspec pulley but I have used 3 pulleys. Stock VE and 2 Gspec pulleys. When I talked to greg he said only a select few pulleys were affected by the wrong markings.

Is't it suppose to be -5 0 5 10 15 20???
