Automatic trans compatibility *help*
Hi guys, I have a question that I can't seem to find any answers to.

So, in the classic B13 SE-R the automatic transmission became available in 1993 as an option. That transmission would be the RE4F03V.
From what I understand, prior to 1993 Nissan used the RL4F03V trans. The difference being the E model being electronically controlled with 5 solenoids and have us a fancy little switch on the dash.

Ok, the L model was just manually controlled by a cable of some sorts? Anyway, I'm wondering the compatibility between the two transmissions. Would I be able to use the L model trans in my 1993 that came with the E model or would the ECU throw a fit?

I only ask because I'm probably going to need a new one by next year and these trans are hard to come by remanufactured. The L model is cheaper by about $600 and I'd almost prefer a non electronically controlled setup as that's just asking for more problems. I'm not worried about performance driving I just want a reliable commuter car.

I've heard the electronic controlled models have issues with line pressure solenoids having a mind of their own so if I could do away with that junk and save a few hundred dollars I'll be happy, I just don't want my ECU to be pissed off not having any solenoids to control.

P.s. Speaking of ECU's do any of guys know if the auto trans is controlled by a daughter board IN the ECU or does the car have a separate Transmission Control Unit?

Thanks anyone and everyone for reading. I'd appreciate any and all input as even Google let me down on this one.

Yeah you can use the older trans, you just have to make sure that your throttle body has the extra linkage for the kick down cable to connect to. It's made the same as the linkage where the throttle drum thing connects, just next to it.

As for the ecu, there are both a separate box, and controls inside the computer. I don't remember which does what though. I swapped my car from auto to 5spd 10 years ago.
