That's a first for me. Never seen one break apart within 20 years of dealing with these cars. Check the lower gear to make sure none of those pieces got between it and the chain.

I have seen one crack at the same spot yours did (right below the arm latch) but the damage was not that extensive to the outside of the tensioner. Came out of a stock VE. Serious carnage there, why not get the upgraded tensioner at this point?

What sort of RPM did it let go?

Funny enough, just last weekend at ATCO, I saw a RWD SR20 Mazworx engine in their trailer (1,400 horsepower, 11k rpm), with a modified tensioner. Not sure on the details, but they essentially replace the innards with a big-ass cap screw (maybe 10mm), and set the tension manually.

The one on the engine was modded from stock and he told me they were working on a from-scratch replacement which they'll be selling.

I saw that too, i'm not sure if that would prevent the cracking but it would prevent the chain from slipping.
