Easiest fix for rod knock
I have been going back and forth on what i want to do with the VE i have with rod knock. I was thinking about doing a mile all motor build but keep going back and forth on the details. So as spring has now arrived i am getting excited about driving the car. So i am thinking about just getting this motor running for a summer or two until i can make up my mind and collect parts for the build.

So the question is:

What can i get away with. The motor ran ok besides the obvious rod knock. I assume i take motor apart and inspect the damage. If it is just one bearing do i get the crank and rod checked/machined and just use the appropriate bearing and be done? Or is there more i should do? I have never repaired a motor on this level before and would like some guidance.

Thanks in advance,

Nick

Turn the crank and get fresh bearings. Some people with real skills will just emory the crank themselves really carefully and button it all up. I wouldnt try it but a lot of it just comes down to resources ans skill level.

It would also be tempting to throw some 16ve pistons in there. You could just get a light cylinder hone and be done pretty easily. Again where do you draw the line?

If you can easily take the rod cap slides on and off without prying or getting hung up on the rod bolts, then remove bearing, measure crankshaft diameter and order bearings according to the diameter on the crankshaft. There is info on this site saying what diameter on the crank corresponds to what OEM bearing code. DO THIS ONLY, do not just throw bearings back in. Also, if you have knock on #4 connecting rod, replace oil pump and all connecting rod bearings that are damaged. My way will work. How do I know.... cause I've done it a dozen times, even to honda engines that rev past 8K daily... and on my own G20 I have by 9K on the engine without removing the head, just replacing the oil pump, and turning down the crankshaft for oversized rod bearings, but used OEM spec bearigns on the mains since they were not damaged.

I just got another crank and used a different oil pump for my VE rebuild.

i did one my self. its best to pull down both pans and do a visual check. My crank was not scared so i just got numbers of crank and changed them and it was good to go

Thanks for the info. I hope it ends up being just the bearings.

Im in the same boat as you are, but I actually scared the crank.

http://www.sr20-forum.com/naturally-aspirated/35293-fs-ve-part-out.html

as you can see I crapped out the crankshaft and the rod bearings pretty bad.

I bought a known good set of VE rods and crank, Im just going to buy a set of ACl bearings and throw them in. Maybe do a slight hone and new rings from greg v.

Any one know a good website to order Acl bearings? Part number??

Are you going to have the engine out of the car, or are you looking to leave it in and do the ghetto rod bearing swap?
