Just save yourself the headache and solder the friggin thing.
22ga isn't that hard to work with.

It's all about seat time with TIG. Keep at it and you'll see significant improvement in the coming months!
Also a quality gas lense/cup setup is a great investment from the start.

I'm moreso curious why you think a B15 tranny swap is a "preposterous" idea. With a new transmission comes a new (likely bigger) clutch disk... no?
