You can test your thermostat by putting it in water and warming the water up to the temp where it should open at.

Since you said you live in a cold weather area, the fuel economy always drops a little bit, probably not as much as you experience, but a little because they (gasoline manufacturers) put oxygen in the car to promote easier cold weather starting.

And, lastly, for the love of god, stop being so weird and adding stupid, pointless remarks. Such as your last one....

"so please let me know if I missed something since people on here think I know nothing about cars and am the sr20 dash thread red headed step child."

Well, I am asking questions and give you some feedback, hence the ENTIRE point of a forum, my newly self-promoted red headed step child. Sorry if you don't like it, it is a legit opinion and since you changed two things at once, you can only test the thermostat you took out.

ok your right save the drama for your moma. Everyone knows the car I bought and I have had to replace a lot of stuff on it due to age and it sitting not being driven. The car runs a lot smoother now and I think that is more attributed to the O2 sensor. They have a usable life of around 10 years or so and can get a little lazy and slow switching polarity at a lot slower rate than a new one. The thermostat really would not make the car run any different other than the heater issue and causing it to run a lot cooler than normal.

The thermostat I took out smelled like shit and was dry rotted. I think it would open when it hit 76.5 degrees C and not close when it fell below it thus the drop in engine temps and the long time to get to operating temperature. Unless you live in Florida everyone, everywhere has seen cold temps this winter. I think it will get better gas mileage and that was my goal all along.

I should be getting at least 300 miles on a tank not 260-280.

I kind of see what your goal is. I want my engine to run as cold as it can. Even though I live in PA and it is currently 5* outside right now. I am running a Nismo thermostat. When it is cold out, my car will sit about 1/4 of the way up. If I turn the heat off, it gets warmer. If I run with heat on fan 4 setting and drive on a highway or one consistent lower speed, temps drop again a bit. I never really lose that much heat, or at least enough to make me complain. I am wearing a jacket when I drive anyway.

Your mileage is not that bad off, but I agree with you. It should be at least 300 miles per tank. I get 310-330 miles per tank in the winter time and about 20-30 more miles in the summer.

300 miles per tank in the winter is very good. My mileage in my b13 has gone down down considerably since the crap gas and cold took over. I can get a bit over 300 in the summer and am more like 260 now.

I seafomed my previous 94 p10t & when I did it, the odo was at 168k!

YouTube - I took the Seafoam Challenge too...

165,000 miles on the car at the time, no problems.

I did the same as Matt but I changed the oil after I drove it around the block for a few miles & left it at idel for 15mins.

Well, did the seafoam 1/3 for 3 and am a little dissapointed. After letting the brake booster suck up the seafoam in a cup and letting sit 5 min. I start the car and its just a little bit of smoke.

So, im like wtf... let it idle a couple minutes and nothing. So finally, I drive off and when I shift into second the idle spiked then POOOOOOFFFFF WWWWHHHOOOOSSSSHHHHH a fury of white/greyish smoke pours out for maybe a half mile. Then, all done.

It idles a little smoother, the crazy thing I noticed is that the rpms dropped when in 4th at 60mph im now at 3650rpm or so. Before I was at 4k even. Ive only been getting 22-26 on hwy the last couple of months so im hoping with will help out.

I really need to get the trans issue(no 5th) solved cause there is no doubt that is killing the mpg.

Why did you leave it in for only 5 mins? Leave the seafoam in the engine with it warmed up for 20 minutes.

huh? the seafoam in the crankcase is still there, ive got a few hundred miles till my oil change. the 5 minutes to sit was for the intake cleaning.

A related question, on the other linked thread about this I read when the booster sucked the seafoam up, the car stalls out. mine didnt, just curious if that means I have a nasty leak in the system and thats why I didnt really see much smoke.(minus the 2nd gear poof for a few seconds)

That would also explain the horrible idle and even worse mpg. I only get 240 a tank on average. again this is hwy in 4th gear at 60mph at about 3650rpm though today I got 26.5. I had Fixed a ground issue last week and adjusted my dizzy timing so im sure that bumped me up from 23average a few weeks ago.

I hope this makes since, kinda hard to explain all this... lol. Im

You let it set in the engine (it goes in the cylinders as well) for 20 mins, not 5

You get better mpgs than I do with only using 4th as well so your numbers are not that bad

Thanks for the info, I will let it sit longer next time. As for mpg, when I first got the car I was getting 300-315 with having 5th gear and basically the same hwy driving. I usually fill up with 9.5 gallons so thats about 31.5-33.2. I did get 34 at that time going up to to sc. all hwy so I know the car can do much better. It is cold so that does affect but I wonder if its too soon to try the seafoam again and let it sit 20 minutes this time... hmmm probably not worth it. It is more than likely the higher revs at hwy speed due to the 5th gear...
