Question for all you audio guys on amps
I have a boston accoustic component set (rc620) - that says the amp requirements are 25-250w. I dont have an amp that small, am I able to use my 400W and turn the gain to 1/2 way? Does that make 200W or no?

you have 1 set of the speakers or 4 sets? Do they have external crossovers? Is the amp you have a 4 channel, 2 or mono block?

I have 4 speakers (2 tweets 2 mids) - yes they have external passive xovers, with one input per - so my 400w amp is 2 channel out which can go to the input on each xover, and they would in turn divide the signal btw the two speakers they are in charge of. Oh and powering it is a clarion apa2001 400W (200W rms) amplifier.

OK so the amp does 400W peak x 1 speaker at 2 ohms,

my speakers are 20-275W at 4 ohms

Anyone have the ability to convert this to apples to apples?

If anything, your amp is still underpowering the speakers with the gain all the way up. 400 peak wattage in bridged mode is the absolute max it will output, not what it will output constantly even as a single channel. If each of your component speakers can handle up to 250 RMS wattage, you're good to go.

After finishing the install. Turn it up to the absolute highest volume the speakers can handle before distorting, and tweak your settings from there. Should be louder than you will ever want to listen to it man.

400Wx1 at 2 Ohms = 200Wx1 @ 4 Ohms = 200Wx2 at 2 Ohms = 100Wx2 at 4 Ohms

You will be around 100W per component set.

thats 100W peak, you'll probably only see about 50w each RMS

Wow those are damn power hungry speakers then -

Now, the manual on the rc620's say the amp needs to be between 25-275W. Am I safe to presume then 12.5-137.5 per speaker then?

So 137.5W would be the max they handle per side I presume, and then 100W peak is reasonable (fairly close to 137.5 per side)

wrong,,,

those are very efficient speakers, they perform very well on 25 rms up to 250 rms

first you have not told us what amp you actually have, also don't pay attention the the "so called writting on top of amp" ,, look at your fuse's to determine how much power you really have.

I did tell you what amp I have, it's in my 3rd post (clarion apa2001)- and the box of the b/a speakers says the amp is supposed to be 25-275, it doesn't say either way about whether it's rms or not. Also, I did tell you right from the manual what the amp does

400w x 1 at 2 ohms
and it's a two channel amp
