New speakers, Kenwood sounds nice.
Kenwood - KFC-1662S

Kenwood - KFC-1693PS

I got these babies today for a steal of a deal and put them in my car.

I placed the higher quality KFC-1693PS speakers up front and the KFC-1662S in the rear. I am very happy with the sound quality and since I already have done the work previously going through two sets of speakers, it was a plug and play kind of project. Very quick.

The only thing I can not figure out is how to attach the grill covers to the speakers. I have holes cut out on the particle board and gray felt that are ugly and I do not know what to do about it.

I just want to attach the grilles and the screws they supplied me do not hold onto any around the speakers frame. I am lost but the quality is amazing!

You mean on the rear deck?

I went with these. Just for the fact that I went 6.5" subs in the rear. But it's still nice just for the fact that I don't ever have to swap grill's when and if I get new speakers.

Here is what mine looked like...

Very clean Wayne...

I got some at Radio Shack that look exactly like those. Except with exposed screw/bolt heads on the top. The OEM speaker covers would not fit, no way, no how. I also had to use some "custom home-made" speaker spacers or standoffs to get the magnet to clear the trunk tension rod. Made them out of particle board with a jigsaw and file.

Yes Wayne, your pictures are exactly what I am talking about. When you purchased those grills how did you mount them? Did they give you screws with the grills and if they did how long were they?

Nice ingenuity with making spacers to fit. Luckily, these cleared very well.

I ordered two of those grills after reading the reviews that they do come with 4 screws. I hope to get them to work like you did Wayne, have any problems with fitting them besides the rear most two screws being a PITA for people with large hands?

why not get the excelons? I got a pair of those for my front speakers and they sound really good. I found a new pair on ebay, I think the KFC-X170's about 2 years ago (been replaced by X-173 I think) for about $50 shipped. Was a great deal.

KFC-X173 eXcelon series do not have a mid-range. The 1693PS has seriously good highs and mids. Mounting depth may be a moot point for some but the KFC-X173 eXcelons are thicker but do have 10 watts RMS more than the 1693PS.

Well if you look I had to cut the rear deck a little around the step edge. I don't know exactly how yours might be. I did that just for the reason of the sub's so they didn't hit anything. But you can do it a little off set. Shouldn't be a SQ issue at all. And yes.. came with all the hard ware you will need. I'm not 100% sure but I think the screws were like 3/4".

Should arrive tomorrow, I will be able to install them on Thursday! What is the best method someone can think of to clean up the holes that are cut into that particle board junk? Just take a knife and shave it away?
