I think Mike22487 is the only one on here that has a clue what he is talking about. I have had my SR for almost 15 years and it has done ever since then. It is the lack of oil in the head, hens valve rattle. The Only time you will have a problem with a knock sensor is under load.

Mike & Will: thanks for your advice. Next oil change, i will get a Nissan filter. I figured that was the cause.

I am surprised that nobody has figured this out.. i saw a post from Calum on here; he didn't find a cause for it either. If Calum can't fix it, nobody can :P

All i can think of is replacing the wire.

have you checked the wiring between the knock sensor and the ECU?

Please everyone needs to understand this is not a knock sensor problem so stop post about it this is oil related.

You need to understand that a little rattle at start up is normal, I have owned quite a few of these cars and it happens often. An oil filter with a check valve is a must but as long as it isn't happening for more than 20 or 30 seconds, not an issue. The lifters are hydraulic and until oil pressure is built up, it will make some noise. Without hearing it I can not tell one hundred percent there isn't an issue, but most likely not. The knock sensor code is a seperate issue. The code will only appear if the computer loses signal from the knock sensor, not for any other reason. Excessive knock will not cause a code, it will pull timing.

Well apparently the Oregon DEQ is real nice. They didn't even see the code. And said if they did see it, it wouldn't be a big deal.

Wow.

I haven't checked the wire. But i understand that is a bit of an undertaking to rewire it to the ECU. Has anyone replaced the wire and actually had success in eliminating this code?

Check your CAT.. The Se-R that I just bought came with three codes, Knock sensor, 02 front, 02 rear..

The car felt fine bottom end, but midrange and top end felt like I was towing a pick up truck.. It was a Bi*** to unistal the knock sensor only to find out that it was fine.. Then I took off the front and rear 02 sensors to test, and they were also within in spec.

Luckily It made a mean ass growl and I decieded to take it for a spin around the block with the sensors off and BAM!!!! car felt a whole lot better..

60 dollars later new cat, errased the codes and I have yet to see the CEL come on.. Not to mention the car woke up

I figure since the CAT was so clogged up (Oem 180k) that the motor was having trouble breathing, most likely the exhaust gasses were creating alot of backpressure and not all clearing out of the cylinders, wich in my opinion made a crappy ass burn and made the motor detonate and knock..

Then again im not a real Tech.. But it worked for me and that is the only explanation I could come up with..

Good luck. I hope this helps.

Don't be surprised if the knock sensor code comes back, the cat being clogged won't cause that code and when Nissan knock sensors go bad, they end up intermittently not working. I have seen cars that I cleared the codes with a knock sensor code and they didn't come back for months. Eventually they all come back. Like I said, it may not be for months though.

Mine is not related to the cat. My cat code is not due to it being clogged, but due to it being hollowed out :P
