You wont burn a compressor up, you might wear the compressor clutch out over a long period of time, but that can be replaced without the whole compressor. Best thing to do is see if someone can recover the freon, and depending on how much is in there, evacuate the system, and recharge with dye in case there is a leak. I work at a Subaru dealership and compressors cycling every 30 seconds is normal when the car is stationary. There are a lot of thing that affect the operation of a/c. Don't panic. Just do what I told you and report back
