dont a lot of the wrc cars use paddle shifters on the wheel? I guess its a good thing for racing puposes.

If you ask me, an insanely short throw (greater than 90% reduction) is mandatory to combat that problem.

i hate short shifters for this exact reason. not only is it far from the wheel the shorter it is the harder it is to change gears!

i had the pace setter adjustable years ago and it was stock length at shortest setting, with a heavy knob it was absolutely brilliant!

one option you have is to simply take a short shifter and add length above the pivot ball. thats your best bet. id get a simple ebay SS and re engineer it.

to do this you need the following.

remove stock cat or move to new location (gets in the way) now add about 1 to 2 inches below the pivot ball, you will need to cut an weld for this. now add about 4 inches above the pivot ball. use a torch and a vice as needed to make what ever bends you want. and a pipe as a handle.

i would also HIGHLY suggest the best bushings/ serban shifter bushing as well + that mod the dude did with the 2x4 steel stock and made the shifter bracket.

ALSO, to made it even higher you could be like me and make a shift knob out a screw driver handle. i did this a while ago and it raised my stock WRX shifter about 3 inches because the handle is nice and long.

YUP.

they use paddle shifters and they never have to take the their foot of the gas during ****s. kinda like power shifting, but there trannys can actually take it.

but **** that ugly ass shifter. im fine with my short throw and momo knob...

id think id have to relearn how to shift with a shifter 3 inches off my wheel.

My buddy has one in his Integra and I love it. Since it is so long you have a huge amount of leverage when shifting so it makes shifting smoother. To counter act the longer moment arm, the throw is just incredibly short, however due to the long moment arm it feels the same as my B&M throw wise. Not to mention it is adjustable, the upper portion swivels so you can move it right next to the steering wheel. I looked into making one of my own, however if you just make an extension chances are it will snap as I have seen that happen. The fastline is extremely thick and robust, as well as made from high quality metal.

classicaddict, you might also be able to raise the mount for the pivot ball up inside the cabin a bit to allow for cat clearance instead.

The closest thing we have to that is the ZSpeed Shifter. It is taller or the same height as stock, but still a short throw.

I'll worry about it when I can actually drive so well that my shifting times are important.

Dudeman is also correct on makeshift rods. Make sure they're beefy. I've snapped one myself (not a long one) and it was welded pretty solidly.
