i've known people to think the timing chain was bad also, only to find out it was a water pump or power steering pump.. try running the car for a min or two with no belts an see if it still makes the noise.. quick an easy way to eliminate any of the pullys or whatever.. jus my .02

is it intermitten? like at revs or only at idle or at both? or at lgiht load ect?

My guess is either stretched chain, or failed lifter. You did say that you've replaced cams a few times, and there's always the possibility that a HLA failed, or somehow sucked in some air and needs to be bled.

As I took the time and tried to figure out the noise I realized that most of the noise was caused by the PVC valve. I took it out and in rattles a lot, I did exchange it with an old one I had around and the noise pretty much went away. The combination of the 550 injectors, PVC valve and "normal" chain noise all get together and give out a hell of a concert
