How does all this translate to a '96 G20? Are there any major differences or any at all? My driver side outer just ripped completely around about four days ago. How long can I drive on it? I need to go to Baltimore and back which is about 1600 miles.

I have seen people put 10k+ on a ripped boot and been fine when they replaced the boot. However it is one of those situations where no one can tell you for sure.

Your boot is ripped, grease will fling everywhere and if dirt gets into the joint....matter of time my friend.

I ended up replacing a boot this summer took less then 20minutes all said and done, very easy especially if it is a outer boot.

You can make the trip, however I doubt anyone would suggest it, because you might be looking for a new axle when you return home.

Dudeman

Edit: As for the G20, the actual changing of the boot is identical, however you will most likely need to disassemble the suspension in a slightly different manor to get the axle out of the hub. I'm sure someone can chime in with expert advice.

I pulled my motor Sunday and 3 of my boots have a rip some where. Also, that catalog link in post #1 is no longer working.

to remove the axle on the G20 you need to take out the bolt on the upper link, one bolt on the bottom of the strut, remove the caliper and hang it out of the way, then turn the wheel 3/4 way toward the side of the car your working on and push the axle through the hub.

yes it's for the outers and the inners are prolly easier to do. All you really have to do is removed the ld boot and clamos from the inner, and the tripod will just slide out, then remove the snap ring holding in the tripod and slide the tripod off of the shaft, it's very easy to do.

Wish i had pics of when i did the inners, but i ddnt have my camera when i did them at work .

kind of looks like this....( btw this isn't from an SE-R, just a generic pic so you can get the idea )

^Thanks for the write up! This worked great. I just have one more boot to pick up and I should be set .

^This is great to have if you think the kit didn't come with enough grease.

cv boot and clamps
There are few links to parts suppliers on this thread. So, who should I select to buy boots and clamps from based on quality and price? Also, what brand grease is best?

The boots normally include Moly grease and a clamp.
I also sometimes use my universal band and clamping tool instead of the clip and crimp type you get in the kit.

The boots are normally black Neoprene type rubber.

There is also a Grey "long Life" type boot. when I have found ( and used) these they are universal.

So if your boots last 10yrs like my B14 Sentra and SE-R the black normal boots are fine. Any Auto store will do !!!

If you have a more difficult app like the Subaru Legacy then get the Grey universal ones. My 2 cents !!!
