I think he means to stay away from the Phantom Grip units. Those things have been around forever and has also earned themselves nicknames like "Random Slip" or " Random Grip"
Turbocharging these days is pretty straight forward not much hidden secrets. Its all in how you pair your parts up and get a good tune. Your GTi-R is a good starting point and in by no means a bad engine choice because its currently already setup factory forced induction so everything is pretty much there as needed. If you have it, id say stick with it. The internals of the GTi-R are going to be by far going to last you longer than a VE does but not saying it wont do its job.
If you are on a budget, go with what you have and build towards it. Nothing says you cant add a VE head to your setup later on.
