nuts missing from under rear main seal housing?
I have a question, i thought my rear main was leaking so i ripped the gearbox off. Seal is fine, not one bit of oil but there are signs of oil.

When i looked through the flywheel i noticed these two bolts were sitting there un-nutted. Have a feeling because of where they are it really doens't make a difference but figured i'd double check, the dust cover from the upper sump has the nuts, but this doesn't.

Talking about the 2 studs at the bottom of this pic, but on the ve they bolt into the upper sump and are closer together

They help seal the upper oil pan, i would put some on while you are in there.

the pan seals pretty well in that area without them but if your there, might as well put them on. Ive seen them missing many times and if i dont have the spare 10mm nuts to go on ill leave them off as well. Never had any leaks from that area. All the 12mm bolts seem to seal the pan just fine.

Thanks guys, i noticed abit of weeping coming from the area so i cleaned it up and nutted it, all is good!

I also noticed every bolt for the seal housing were loose, i guess the previous owner re-gasketted it but didn't torque the bolts :/

If you were getting some leakage you probably should have pulled the pans and the seal housing and resealed them. I doubt just tightening the bolts and installing nuts will help. Once oil gets past its pretty much all over.

While you at it, swap out the 2 studs with bolts, that way (if need be) you can drop the upper oil pan to change bearings without removing the flywheel/trany etc.....

You can do that anyways with the studs. lol. Ive done it many many times. The studs actually assist when putting the pan back up as it helps align the pan properly. Just push it against the spacer and trans as hard as you can until it slides over and whalla.

Never ever had an issues taking off and putting a pan back on with the trans and everything in place.
