VE Swap ? about ECU
I have a 91 SE-R that im swappin in a VE motor. I have read about 99% of all the info i can find on the forum about this swap and i feel like im sucking on a firehose. My question is do i need to upgrade the ECU if im installing a MSD 8969 (orderd and otw) switch for the VVL or can i use the ECU (the motor i ordered came with the VE ECU and wiring harness) or do i also need to upgrade/tune/change it. I have also ordered SSAC headers/downpipe and the Dayco hose as well so far. Appreciate any advise or direction.

The 8969 just activates the cams, you still need a tuned ecu.

ok, so is it best to send ECU off to JWT then or is there a better route to go. Keep in mind that this ride is a stripped down B13 gonna be streetable but mainly for track use if that helps. thanks.

There are a few choices -

New JWT would be the easiest, least flexible, and probably most expensive.
Used JWT, whatever you pay for it, plus $100 for a new tune from JWT.

Outside of JWT, you're going to need to provide your own tune, though there are some floating around on this forum, and sr20forum.com (in the Calum section).

Calum is out of business, but you could find a Basic or Realtime pretty easily. Vadim has a Realtime for sale right now, and his post from this morning explains the differences between it and the Basic.

There are others which have similar Basic/Realtime options like JKTuning, and NEMU, though I'm not up to speed on the specifics.

Hi Sean,

You may find this thread I started useful, it explains the differences and advantages between a basic tune and realtime from Nismotronic.

Good luck!

Nicoxis,

thanks for the info, i was reading up on the Nemu and it looks like an add on to the existing ECU and im not so hot when it comes to electronics. And my motor just arrived about an hour ago so im ready to start this install!!!

Nemu is actually a chip, a daughter board to be exact, kind of like Calum Real Time and Nistune is the same concept. Tunercode is the firmware that lets you tune much more items. TunerCode is an add on to Calum ecu's (I'm hearing that it's no longer sold for Calum ECU's), and comes by default with Nemu's as part of the NismoTronic tuning package.

NismoTronic ECU is hands down the best option for a tunable OEM ECU (compared to Calum or Nistune). If you can afford it and want additional tune-ability that's the way to go. If you can still can get TunerCode for Calum RT's (TunerCode was originally built for Calum RT's), you can get fairly close to NismoTronic ECU's tuning wise.
