How far did you break your motor down?
Sorry if this is a repost.

Anyway as some may know I bought my VE last weekend and am about to tear into it this weekend. Just trying to decide on how far to break it down. I was there for the compression test and very good numbers accross all cylinders.

Just from sitting and to be on the safe side I'm replacing the main seals, but what else?

Also how far should I go on replacing accessories?

Also right now I'm just looking to get a running car that will pass emissions (yes car will get a tune, and it's a B13). I was already told by 2 emissions facilities and the state of texas that older then 20 years and not OBD2 just the sniff. Since I'm going to paint the car I will go into internal mods after, so just needs to run for about 12-18 months anyway.

I've also read debates over replacing springs and such for N1's. Should I just not bother putting them in until the rebuild?

I would have posted this in my Member's Car section, but I need direct VVL advice. I always try to be as educated as I can before swapping an engine.

i would pop the valve cover to have a peek inside, but other then that i wouldn't touch it, just swap the parts you need to on an go.

springs with n1 cams is optional but it really depends, say you make power to 8500 an wanna rev to 9000, well i'd get springs, chances are with a stock motor an n1's you'll peak at 7k or so, so no point it revving mega high. however if you have additional bolt-ons like a nice 4-1 header, custom intake manifold or whatever and you make power up high like i said then you should probably get springs.

emissions shouldn't be a problem.

use the ve alternator if its any good, their usually 90amp, sometimes they don't work though, worth a shot! and you can use the ve starter but you'll need an extra long bolt with a nut because only one hole is threaded.

what are your goals? why are you thinking about a full rebuild?

Not really a rebuild mainly a little more power. Probably by the time I'm done I will be like most that start VE then go to VET then go to VET super car.

you should get some 20v pistons to put in, some acl bearings, 4-1 header and a custom intake manifold, with some n1 cams you should easily reach your goals and have a reliable engine that will have no issues passing emissions, the after market springs wouldn't hurt.

for a turbo motor I'd go a completely different direction tho, CP 9:1 pistons, aftermarket rods, tubular t3 mani, 6262 ect.

For about 200 wheel HP and driveability:

JMR header
At least a warm air intake, cold air intake better
N1 cams
Supertech valve prings
3" mandrel exhaust to a nice muffler
A good ECU tune

replace the rear main, and call it a day. save cash and buy parts as time goes on. then take a whole weekend and put them goodies in.

this ve game is changing way too quick. chances are that in a couple of months theres going to be better cams, possibly springs, and who knows what else.

When I bought my first jdm de just replaced front and rear seals. A year later had a hg blow and the deck and head were damaged (was it already like that???) I then bought a w10 with the intention of replacing hg and bearings but the more I tore it down I decided to do a full factory fresh rebuild. It's a good thing I did because the exhaust valve guides were very sloppy. I now would not recommend any other way because now I know what I have and what condition it's in.

Just replace the main seals and put it in for now. Valve stem seals can be replaced when you upgrade springs later easily with motor in the car.
