New Water Pump fitment - Gasket with/without silicone?
Bought a new N1 pump for my ve motor. The old one is fitted with only silicone sealer, and no gasket.

Should I fit the new pump only with it's gasket and no sealer, or should I do both? I'm leaning towards gasket only, but there's no way to tell if the surface of the pump housing is perfectly flat after being used before.

Right now the motor is sitting on the engine stand, and it's much easier to do it right, now, than sorting out leaks once it's in the chassis.

The gasket can be hard to position correctly, and I don't trust them. I've always done Ultra grey RTV only. Seems extremely rare to see one of these done with the actual gasket. No one ever has a problem with the RTV. I mean, that stuff holds these engines together anyway.

Grey RTV FTW. That's all I've used on my water pumps, no gasket whatsoever. Engines that I have road raced at extended periods at 8K never failed from water pump sealant. This in 115+ degree temps with track temps approaching 125-135.

The gaskets must only come with non-OEM pumps then.

I bought an aftermarket WP and used the gasket plus silicon. Started leaking a little. good thing you didn't use the gasket.

My bud used the gasket once and then we installed his motor then it pissed like a mofo on his first start-up. He had to go in by himself and change it again w engine in car. Not a fun job.
