Z32 (Blowthrough) MAF Screen Damaged OK to remove?
After taking apart my piping for a MC install I noticed my screen in front of the Z32 (Blowthrough) MAF was damaged to the point of I am worried of FOD in the engine. I understand (being a photo lighting nut) that the screen is there to straighten the airflow for a less turbulent reading. However, is it safe to remove given that the damage is done. I have seen billet housings that do not incorporate a screen. For those of you with real world tuning knowledge will it make a negligible difference? I have had the car professionally tuned as a "street tune" which is very safe a WOT (on the rich side) and its nowhere near a DD so if it just means that there are a few idle/deceleration issues I am fine with that. Thank you for all the help

you shouldnt see any difference with the screen removed.

It will cause turbulence and provide false readings to your MAF. Replace it.

Is there a replacement screen availible and what would be the "false readings".

The screen allows a smooth flow of air, or evenly distributes and disrupts any turbulence in your intake system up to that point. The hot wire could get a swirling vortex of faster air which would make the MAF have to run warmer to keep the voltage where the MAF is "happy". Since the ECU depends so heavily on the MAF, I would not take the screen out. Other have done it in the past, but I would not do it.

I do not know where to find a replacement screen. I forget how the screens are mounted in those MAFS anymore. It has been years since I handled one.

Kyle is correct, but honestly this maf was never built to be blow through anyway, thus the fluid dynamics are going to be different what it was designed to see anyway. In real world, we are talking about very small differences (screened vs not screened), which are most likely negated by you being blow through anyway.

Just keep the screens off, if the car drives fine (AFR's are in check) then you will be fine.

its just a debris screen. it is not a flow straighter like on the gm mafs

Removed the screens and now the car runs hella rich. I am in talks with my tuner to see if they can fix it. The voltage however is steady.

check for boost leaks?

That makes sense. I did have one coupler clamp that I didn't quite like going back together I will double check all them tonight. And replace the one that I didn't like. Thank you
