Thread: Trans removal

I am feed up with this car already. I cant even get the trans off. I have removed every bolt bossible that looks like it holding the trans on. I have no ideo what to do besides send it to a shop to have someone else deal with this head ache!

Alot of times you actually have to pry it off the motor. Not to hate but there's still a good chance you didn't get all the bolts either. Did you get the ones in the rear engine mount? What about the two 14 mm ones on the bottom?

Im pretty sure I got all of those bolts. But I can tell you this, I wont be putting the trans back in myself!

last time I did the trans on mine I probably broke every osha rule there was

I had a lift and I didn't feel like getting out the trans jack cause they're a pain in the ass to manipulate. So I he manned it up there 3 or 4 times and couldn't get it to line up. Finally I just rested on my shoulder and had someone lower the car down to that level while I was underneath it.

Those allignment pins (what's the technical term?) fit really tight, you will probably have to pry on it to get it loose, it won't just fall off.

It takes a fair bit of rocking around to get the transmission to free up, but, not a whole bunch. I've found up/down motions, and rotating the transmission forward/backward are best - be careful about prying on things!

Putting it back in is a bit simpler, but, it takes a bit of thinking.

You can (assuming you're on jackstands) either "he-man" it up there, or balance the transmission on a floor jack and get it lined up, while a friend "applies gentle force" to the end of the transmission from the d/side wheel well.

It's best to take your time, and, if it takes multiple efforts, don't rush it. Take a break, especially if you're not used to this sort of work. Otherwise, off goes the temper, and something dumb could happen, might cost you (more) money.... then more temper.... vicious cycle.

I just swapped my trans last week. it took about an hour total. getting it out is easy.putting the new one back in was tricky. I laid on my back, with bellhousing resting on my knees and the case in my hands then wiggled my way under the car and pushed it up into place while starting one bolt to hold it in place.

I do things a bit differently lol. I always go out the bottom with everything, but don't use a lift or anything. I just raise the car up over it. As for putting the tranny back in, I slide it under the car, lower the car a tad, and reach down pick the tranny up and slide it in lol.


Fwiw, doing it with a 5spd is alot easier than the auto's. The auto's weigh about twice as much lol.
