    Update

I've hit my first actual snag. I'm trying to find the database table that holds some poll information, and it's taking some real time. There are hundreds of tables in the database (one reason this shit needs to be re-written) when there should only be 20 or so. I have to look through hundreds of tables trying to find the data I'm looking for, or look through the source code which sometimes helps find the table. Hopefully doing that will bear fruit this weekend. Sorry for the delay. =(

I found the poll information I was looking for. Can't believe it ended up being right "next" to the other main poll info I'd already found.

    Update

I got the polls sorted out and converted in the database. Next up are the posts, which shouldn't be too bad. That will be the last thing to convert on the back-end, then I can work on the front end stuff for it.

    Update

I hit a bit of a snag trying to do some of the back-end updates to the posts. I wanted to avoid having to process the over 1 million posts more than I had to, or find efficient ways to get it done so that eventually when the conversion happens, it won't take all day. Sadly, after looking into it for a while, it's just not going to happen. So it turns out the posts need to be processed once, which takes about 2 hours, and then likely again, which might take another 2 hours (but hopefully less).

So I've decided I just can't save the time, and things will just have to take hours.
I have moved on getting the rest finished.

I also found another table I really need to convert, so next up I will be tackling the post edit history table. That should go well, and likely by this weekend I'll be ready to start on the front-end stuff for sections, threads, and posts.

    Update

I got the post edit history converted over. In doing so, I noticed I should probably also get the 750 post attachments converted over. But I'm not finding them where I expected to. I'll keep hunting for them and hopefully find them soon. I have Monday and Tuesday off work, so I'm hoping to make more good progress in the coming days.

Edit: I believe I've found the actual attachment file data now. I should be able to make good progress over the next couple days.

    Update

I've converted the attachments, so I'm finished with the back-end work.

Now I can get started on the front-end work for forum sections, threads, posts, posts with polls, and posts with attachments.

I've basically finished the pure forum section display stuff (think the main page).
Next I will work on the hybrid section/thread display stuff (think sub-forums like this).

    Update

Well, my goal was to finish the hybrid display stuff this week, but I did not. I got lots of good work done, but there was much to do that I wasn't expecting. Don't worry, it was all good work that needed to be done and no snags anywhere. I just underestimated what it would really take for this step. I hope to have the hybrid display stuff done soon. I'll update again later.

The site is really starting to come together now. It looks and behaves so much like the current site I have a hard time telling them apart sometimes.

This forum has a spotty history with picture hosting. It had it, then it didn't, then it did again but it didn't work well, etc.
I've always thought a forum should not be involved with picture hosting. That is my personal view on the matter. A forum should do one thing, and do it well. Picture hosting is a completely different animal that should be left up to picture hosting sites that are MUCH better at providing that service.

For sure, picture hosting won't be part of the initial roll-out. It likely won't be part of the 2nd and 3rd planned upgrades either. After the site is back to normal, and all of the core features are in place, we can then talk about picture hosting and see what it would take to do that, do it well, and do it within costs.

I hope that answers the question?

The hybrid section/thread display is finished. In the process, I also finished the regular thread display as well. The main things left until we go live are thread creation, post display, and post creation. I'm going to tackle post display next. I think this is the largest task left, which I saved basically for last. More updates soon. =]

I'm sure this will be of interest to many people. The current forum has a mobile version which has some issues, but generally I believe it works well. (No clue if TapaTalk is still compatible, or used by anyone?)
The new site is not going to have a mobile version out of the gate. For sure we will get it working great on mobile devices, but it is not being built specifically with mobile in mind just yet. That being said, I checked the new site on a Galaxy S6 running Chrome and it is surprisingly well behaved. It is by no means what mobile users will want to use for any length of time, but it at least doesn't shit the bed. There were a few odd things I'd like to take care of later, but I was pleasantly surprised with the results.

Now back to making real progress...

It's going to be a bit before the next major milestone is reached, so nothing major to report right now. I am making progress though, and fixing or improving more things as I go that I've never liked about the forum. Simple little things like the pages shown in the thread preview. Right now if a thread has more than one page, you see tiny links to some of the pages in the thread preview. If there are more than 4 pages, it provides links to the first 3 pages, then a link to the last page. That last page link is extremely useful, and I believe most of us use them to jump immediately to the latest posts. For example, if there is a thread with 10 pages, how often do you want to see the first page? Sometimes... So a link to the first page makes sense (even if it is redundant). But the second page, and third page? Who cares? Who wants to jump to page 3 of a 10-page thread? That's not likely... But jumping to page 9 might make sense, so you can catch up on the conversation...
So I'm changing the way that works.

    Current thread preview pagination:
    1 2 3 ... 10

    New thread preview pagination:
    1 ... 8 9 10

It's little things like that which I'm very happy to improve. I've also solved the problem where you would see 1 2 3 ... 4 which was hilariously dumb.

More real updates soon I hope.

    Update

I have made good progress. Not as much as I wanted for various reasons, but I'm getting there.

Getting the thread/post display stuff working made me realize I needed to overhaul the routing technique I was using. You see, the new forum software will have a slightly different URL structure than the old forum software, which means that I need to do some fancy routing to get the old links to work seamlessly. To make sure everyone's bookmarks still work, and links to threads, or posts in the past all still work, I need to detect that an old link is being used, and route it accordingly. Anyway, I got all that sorted out, and then continued to work on the thread/post display.

I'm getting it done, but it's a lot of work and there are really tricky things to take into account, like the post numbering system needs to skip numbering deleted posts so Admins and Members all see the same post number for the same post, even if Admins can see additional posts in the mix. It sounds simple, but trust me, it's not.

So, the normal post display should be done soon. Then I can start working on getting polls to display properly, and then the classified ads.

With the hurricane sparing South Carolina, work on this will continue as usual.
I know it's been a long time. Some haven't been able to access the forum for 8 months.

I appreciate the humor. It's taken me quite a long time to figure out how to duplicate the post numbering system while maintaining good performance and efficiency. I took a break to do some house cleaning and it came to me (as often is the case with tough problems). I will have real progress to report soon once the damn FTP client decides to connect. I probably need to reboot. Thing get a little silly in Win7 after months of up-time.

I'm not talking once - or even the 'myfilestore' with the half naked chicks which bug the crap out of me - I'm talking about the red screen, I literally had to click 'trust safe site' 4 times just to get into the forum once, it kept refreshing the darn red screen.

    Update

I figured out how to duplicate the old post numbering system (skipping deleted posts) without any real performance hit. So I've continued on to get the posts showing up, and the first step there is to get the user profile part on the left side where the avatar shows up to work properly. I think I've finished all that now, so I'll move on to the other parts of the posts.

Since it's been so long and everyone is getting antsy, here are a couple screenshots that represent months and months of work for you to look at.
Things should look very much like what you're used to. Things that will be a bit different are the main pagination style. I'm actually quite proud of it, and I think everyone will learn to like it.

Lots of good progress still, but no major feature completion to report yet. As I figured, the post display has turned out to be the most difficult and complicated so far, but I'm getting there. Here's another screenshot showing the progress.
