Paypal "Gift" option
I have no idea where this would go best, so mods please edit out this line and move appropriately.

I’ve noticed an increasing trend of people using or suggesting the use of the “gift” option in Paypal. For those of you not aware of it: it’s an option that allows you to send money as a gift to a person and it does not require fees on either end (unless you use Paypal via a credit card). This sounds sweet to many as a 'no fee' way of using Paypal. BUT, be aware it does not come without a cost. The “gift” option is for sending money as a gift. There is no buyer protection, no way of getting it back, and Paypal will (for lack of better words) laugh at you if you try to dispute an order.

So keep that in mind when/if someone asks you to use the “gift” option.

Now, that said I’m not implying we cheat people. I’ve never had an issue buying anything, and any issue I’ve had with selling thing has been worked out. But I have seen people get scammed, and I would hate to see it happen with the “gift” option. I can see someone saying “Ya, I will sell you this NIB gt3071r for $750 shipped, just pay the 3% Paypal fees ($22.5) or gift it.” And the buyer going “Psssssh, thank you I will save that $22.5 on this steal of a turbo.” And getting raped by it. So, just be warned.

Something to keep in mind, when you buy things via Paypal outside of eBay, they can only help you if you haven't received an item. They will point and laugh at you if the item comes in broken, or missing parts.

Yeah, I've been offered the "gift" option before and had to respectfully decline. I'd rather pay the paypal fee.

Not true.

I sold something on eBay, and it was PayPal that held funds until the other person dropped the claim against me. The claim wasn't through eBay. I never once got an email from eBay or anything about it. The item in question was damaged in shipping and they held a claim against me via PayPal, instead of UPS; I'm still mad about that.

I almost exclusively use the gift option, but its only with long standing forum members who I trust with that.

Paypal = eBay. Transaction happened through eBay (their parent company) thus Paypal carried out the dirty mess.

When you deal outside of eBay, forums, websites, Paypal has no jurisdiction over them. This happened to me when I bought my airsoft gun from China. It came without a charger or battery. I logged a dispute and Paypal asked if I received the item. Once I said yes, they closed the case with a link to their policy (that I read 20 times before).

I called them up, they told me that since it was outside of eBay, they had no jurisdiction and can only help you if you haven't received the item at all. But can't help you if it came broken, missing all pieces but the one you received. As long as you got something from the seller, they can dust off their hands.

if you really want to get around the paypal fee, wait 3-4 days to load the money from your bank account, into paypal. then when you do the switch, no fee.

You also pay no fees if you have a bank account directly linked to your paypal account.
