??? 24 Hours Lemons: 1998 Sentra 1.6l Qs ???
We have gotten accepted for the 24 Hours of Lemons; Nelson Ledges The Lamest Day.

Car: 1998 Sentra 1.6l

Going with ADV22F brakes.
Front blown (no gas charge left) AGXs with 350ish springs.
Rear???

Have a bunch of questions:

  • What pads, this is a true 24 hour race, but we will probably be on all seasons, or at best 195/50 Direzza Star Specs. We don't need extremely aggressive braking and definitely would prefer the least amount of service/changes as possible. I am leaning towards XP8s/XP10s. Is it realistic to get through 24 hours with one set of pads.
  • What do I do with the rear suspension. I have B13 rear GC sleeves and a bunch of 6" long springs. Can these work? I have only popped my head up in the wheel well once, the rear on the B14 looks like it may require taller springs?
  • I am just planning on using the stock (tired) rear shocks and 550 springs in the rear with no sway bar. Probably running a less aggressive tire in the rear compared with front.
  • How do you do an A/C compressor removal. The idler pulley is throwing me off. Haven't looked at it too close, but not like the SR20.

Thanks,
Jeremy

Any 24hr race is a big undertaking. We planned for a 24hr race once. On paper it was $7800.

For the Lemons, I recommend,

New stock clutch and press. plate t/o bearing
replace the fuel pump, fuel filter, clean the injectors
ditch the power steering
2 spare alternators, 2 water pumps, spare belts
spare up, lwr rad hoses
Start with new pads and new rotors. plan on pads around 8 to 10 hrs. Replace the front rotors with pads and rear pads around 18hrs.
3 to 4 sets of wheels. 205/50 more rubber, slower wear. Plan for flats and flat spotted tires.
The shocks. I would start on new AGX up front. The 6" springs will work on the rear.
new stiffer front sway bar bushings. check tie rods. align the car, adj to neg camber, as much as you can get.
Recover any freon in the ac sys. remove the condenser and compressor.
Hollow out the thermostat and flush the rad. refill with water weter.
Just focus on reliability with good planning.

Wish you luck.

I took a look at the rules. Get another car for parts and repair as anything breaks. I personally go to the track to race, not to work on cars.

Jeremy,
I have run XP10s street and track for the last three or four years. They've lasted me for a season - so I would absolutely say yes to those!
The 1.6 is a great engine - I'm still surprising people with what it can do. Put on some type of CAI and open up the exhaust. Keep us informed of your progress!

Took the 1.6 to the track, threw on 350f/300r springs and the car felt surprisingly good, a little too free in the rear but definitely not bad for $50 worth of parts thrown together.

But the car was slow as crap I could only get it up to 90mph on the back straight at Nelson, should have hit 100ish no problem (my NX2000 would hit 115mph). Anyways to make a long story short one of the other drivers popped the engine. It's o.k., because I have 3 spare GA16DEs.

However we found a 200SX SE-R salvage title for so cheap it felt like stealing. Which means we'll leave the springs off to not push our luck with the judges.

I guess I never mentioned the car is going to be pink and we are raising money for the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Got a sponsorship from Dunlop so 195/55R15 Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec will be proudly worn.

I have always wanted to do one of these races. Best of luck to you! Please post back up how you did, what you learned, and photos!
