SR20VE vs Roller Rocker - How to tell them appart
A forum member asked for details on how to tell a VE apart from a Roller Rocker. Here are some pictures and details on the differences between the three main versions of the engine: SR20VE, USDM Roller Rocker, and JDM Roller Rocker.

SR20VE
Key Points:
- Cam switcher above the distributor: Look for Brown and Green solenoid plugs
- Intake Manifold: See how it's round and how far back it sits
- Valve Cover: All 20VE's came with black internal baffle valve covers.
- Oil filter under intake manifold

USDM Roller Rocker
Key Points:
- Intake Manifold: Has very sharp angles, jagady
- EGR right above the distributor. This can be confused with VVL solenoids to an untrained eye
- Top Feed injectors
- Very Low Redline: Due to very soft valve springs redline is capped at 6700rpm
- Oil filter under intake manifold (Like VE's)

JDM Roller Rocker
Key Points:
- Intake Manifold: Round, looks similar to SR20VE to an untrained eye
- Side Feed injectors: just like VE's
- IACV: Same style IACV as VE and in a similar location
- No EGR or Solenoids on top of distributor
- Oil Filter in traditional DE location

Here is a great RR thread by Tokes.

Vadim, you are not 100% right... the UKDM (its whole EUDM, not just UKDM) you showed was only used in facelift P11 (99-02 P11-144). Older (96-99) is same as JDM. Plus even these used both sidefeed (96-97) and topfeed (98-99). I should make own thread about EUDM SR20 as i had all of them and had them apart. I have 7 SR´s right now...

Your correct I don't know enough about EUDM RR's to really comment on them, thus removed it.

Can you confirm the Roller Rocker redline (mainly the ones with rounder manifold)?

We have a few variations of the roller rocker motors here too. At least 3 I'd say. Similar looking to the eudm motor pics you posted. Some have slightly differences to the valve cover, different oil filter locations etc, but the hardware of the block and head is the same as far as I'm aware. Redline differs based on the chassis designation. There were comfort and sport models. Redline of 6750 and 7250 respectively. Different ecu's.

Seems very high to me, Doctor G. Are those redlines from ECU?

Vadim:

131HP version (SLX, SRi, SE, ...) 6500 rpm redline (less agressive cams, ecu, 4-1 mani)
150HP version (GT) 7000 rpm redline (more adressive cams, ecu, 4-2-1 mani)
