gearbox nastiness
we brought simons car back to mine today to get the box off.

straight cut ppg gearset, standard final drive. Will now be going back together with a ppg straight cut final drive and mainshaft, normally when the casings break its the input shaft that pops, this time it was the main shaft which we're guessing is due to the helical f/d used.

There will be some modifications to the case and probaly another external brace like the one he used on his old quaife box, which held together for a full years racing and has now been sold on.

WOW that is some f'd up **** right there. How much power is this guy putting out that he killed his box like that?

Since I don't know much about Gti-r's. Can the stock transmission hold up to 300 whp? I want an R someday. 300whp is what I"d probably shoot for.

simons car is around 450 atf (300-350atw)

the stock transmission can be destroyed at standard power, tbh, they're a peice of junk, some seem to last ok, some dont

lovely that kieron, this issue will be resolved some day i guess.

some of the standard boxes hold up and some dont, wasnt jay gant running standard box for a little while? even on that 11.13 quarter vid he has standard box, it finally threw the towel in not so long ago

i think jay has always run on standard boxes. I dont think he has ever run an os giken which is what si is using. Im positive, that if si had used the brace again, it wouldn't have happened. He's going to make 2 more up and theres a few bits on the case we are going to weld.

i have some other plans for mine that should help minimise the risk, we'll have to see what happens as with the slicks mines going to get a beating :lol:L

yeah thats what i thought too, ahhh yes the good old OS giken twin plate, not good for the shafts, i would have thought the dog gears would minimize the shafts parting though? as you say though bud, the brace should help.

slicks! definitely taking a beating yes!

out of curiosity, your new wheels are 15x7 yeah? what size tyres are you running?

wezz, our guess is using the standard helical final drive has transferred the loading down the main shaft which is why the case cracked on that bearing seat, not the input shaft like normally happens. We brought straight cut ppg final drives at the end of the year, hopefully that will prevent it.

i'll be running 16 x 7's (15's wont clear the brakes) slicks are 225/50/16

bobtiji.

Its not tranny fluid, its ectoplasm

he was using some stuff i cant remember the name of, its actually a bluey colour, you can see it in the box, its expensive and designed for use on dogboxes
