Broken Axle?
So I was on my way to work this morning, got a little crazy with the right peddle taking off from a stop sign and when I slammed it into 2nd gear from 9K something let loose. I put it in 4th and it sort of maintained speed but it felt like it was slightly bogged down. Put it into 3rd and the RPM and speedo would go up but the car did not move any faster. Coasted into a parking lot and inspected what I could. No shaft is broken that I can see and wiggle the axles and nothing stood out. I was close to work so I got a ride in and I have a trailer coming after work to get it home. To me this sounds like a broken axle, any one have any thoughts?

Sounds like a busted axle to me.

..unless you blew up a hub/bearings? ..has happened to us before at the track along with blowing up axles actually... lol

..curious to see what you find and report back though

Or, you could have blown the transmission... I hate to say that, but it's possible. From those revs you could have sheared a few teeth off.

Hopefully, it's only an axel though. You'll know more once you can jack it up and inspect.

Diff could have 'sploded. When I cracked the case in my B14 with worn OEM engine mounts, wheel hop cracked the case. I never saw what happened inside of it but it leaked juice from many places.

The car was left where the problem happened and I had to get it towed. This was probably eleven years ago so my memory is a bit fuzzy but I just remembered that happened.

But if I put it in gear and let the clutch out the speed goes up, the car does not move. So the final drive must be spinning. It could be a diff as well though, could be a good time to upgrade. I won't have time tonight to tear into it, but I should sometime this week or weekend. Either way it is not my only car so I not so concerned, its just money right...

The splines on the halfshaft(s) going into the differential seem like the most likely if there are no easily visual signs of damage.

Sounds almost like the same thing that happened to me on 3rd at 5k. All of a sudden it felt like something gave coasted the car to a station.it moved somewhat but by the time I got to a light she wouldn't move .when I yanked the transmission out, the input shaft was milled and rounded the clutch opening where input shaft went.when u step on the gas sounds like the transmission had a empty can of beer in it

After we got the car home yesterday we jacked it up and spun the wheels out of gear. The other wheel would spin, I could hold the axle and you can hear the diff spinning in the trans. I am assuming the splines are stripped on one of the axles.
