Serious Question about Your SR20DET.
Im in a heated debate with myself over what the next car i own will be. At the moment i can't decide between a s14 with an SR20 Swap, or a MKIV VW With the 1.8l Turbo 20v engine.

I have been told that because the sr20 was never manufactured in the nissans that were sold in the states, replacement parts sometimes have to be imported from japan, which costs mad $$ and makes my daily driver have alot of downtime.

I wanted to know what you sr owners do when your car has a serious mechanical problem, maybe you can sway me from a VW.

Thanks

Maybe consider a B or P-series chassis, Welcome to the forum BTW.

Most Sr parts are sourced from other Sr related cars allready overhere. Most other replacement parts are in stock at more than a few places state side allready.

I have had my RWD SR for going on 10 years. The parts availability is not an issue aside from maybe having to wait a few days for shipping. Basic maintenance posts are usually available from your local parts store i.e. plugs and filters. We have a good set of vendors supplying everything else already in the states.

Keep in mind the Nissan won't have as many breakdowns, which also means you will be looking for parts much less often.

exactly! i drive mine daily and most days pretty hard too. no issues after i worked all the basics out. before my swap though, i tried to get extra parts put together - i have a spare trans, head, oil pump and water pump. if i need more, ill buy them from a vendor like was said above.

If you're using a VW as a basis to say that parts are hard to get and are expensive for SR20 cars, you obviously haven't had to fix VW's. Now add labor time to that

Volkswagen parts are not hard to get.. That specific engine has so much community support and aftermarket support its not even funny. I can easily find replacements for anything that car needs on the internet as well as at the local Volkswagen Dealer. I can also find in depth DIY's on how to do any job the car needs.
I can't go down to the Nissan dealer and get EVERY part that an sr20 needs, which is my point. I can't wait for parts to ship from japan so i can then fix my daily driver.

Never had a part my dealer couldn't get. But, as a guy who's owned both, I'm simply telling you what I've seen, and that's a more reliable, easier to work on SR20. I'd rather get parts for and work on an SR20 car over a VW any day of the week for so many reasons. Seems you have your mind made up already though....
