Aftermarket ignition/coil questions
Some of the issues I've had with my car lately have led me to believe that I could use a new coil and or ignition system completely. I'm just wondering what aftermarket options we have, what you've used, and what your experiences are.

idk if you'd be interested or not but the ford EDIS is a totally stand alone unit that runs off of a triggger wheel. It uses wasted spark and puts out a helluva spark.

Yeah I don't even know wtf that is man. Are you using it?

I used it for a little while with megasquirt. Basically, it's a crank sensor, trigger wheel, EDIS module and ford coil pack, pretty simple to wire up and all it needs is power to the module. You can pull them at your local junkyard more than likely. I got my set up mostly from a 94 ford escort 1.9l You can get aftermarket coil packs for them as well with a lil' more juice.

Sounds like more than I'm willing to get into at this point.

I've seen the aem stuff before, has anyone used them on our stuff before? I've never paid attention to this before lol.

Ok so I'm really thinking of trying out the AEM stuff. I'm just not sure if I want to keep my ignitor and use the "dumb" coil, or ditch it and try the "smart" coil.

Any info is greatly appreciated.

The OEM Nissan ignition system is fully capable for all but the most aggressive setups. Just use new OEM stuff.
The ignitor (power transistor) is not a weak point, so you could do the "dumb" coil no problem. Or you could do the "smart" coil if you want. Again, I stress that factory stuff is plenty good.

Yeah I know fully well that the stock stuff is plenty strong. I'm just thinking about the possibility of my 222k mile stock stuff being less than standard, if that makes sense. Think it might be time to replace, and wanted to check my options.

At this point the price for either of the aem units is cheap enough that I might try one, just to see the results.
