B15 trans whining
I found out after I bought this transmission...that it had been apart/rebuilt.(based on the non factory silicone used)My question is this...what would cause this?
-Trans improperly rebuilt?
-Abuse/wear from high miles?
-Wrong gear oil?( I am using new MT90,I dont know what was used before)

Also...Is this thing gonna last,or just blow up on me all of the sudden??
I spent the big bucks on this trans in hopes of avoiding future trans problems associated with the B13/B14 trans.
I even sold all my spares, thinking this would last for quite a while.(I thought it was gonna be low mileage)

Tearoffguy has had a B15 in his NX for years and it has no such whines, and actually shifts slightly better,IMO.
I/we installed his and I installed mine so the issue is not the install..
We drove our cars BACK TO BACK yeaterday,to compare.Mine whines, his is silent.

I am afraid I have been with this trans...what do you guys think?
Makes me think it was high miles.
I wonder if it will hold up with more power? I am just a bolted DE now.

I have spent the money for,the time to install it,and now I am stuck with the whiney B15 trans.
I do like the way the car pulls though...whiney or not

i dont acutally know what would cause a whine.

who did you get it from ? if you noticed the aft silicone, why didnt they :/.

regardless, id say drive it like ti was fine, cause theres no point in babying it, if its gonna break, itll break. when it does, have it rebuilt with a q18 gear stack, also b13,b14,p11 diffs are all the same, incase you ever need to swap one in.

I got it from a member who I will not name at this time(he knows who he is).
I sent him a PM when I got it,and I was told that there was new gears put in it due to a 2nd gear synchro problem or something....so he knew about the silicone, but the pics didnt really show it,and he didnt mention it in the thread.
I am not sure if thats a good or bad thing having new gears. At first I thought maybe the gears are whining from being new,but I have put about 700 miles on it so far no changes.
I was not made aware of this before buying.I guess I thought a seller would disclose that info, especially if the buyer can see that it was taken apart.

Gears weren't put in right or shimmed right or a bearing got debris and is dead.

If it is bearing... could be epic, but that should get worse sounding with time.

Without lack of better information or even hearing the transmission, for the most part once a transmission starts "whining" it typically doesn't end too well..........

Try 85W140 and see if that "dampens" out the noise some. If it however does get louder with time, I have a feeling your going to lose atleast one gear.

Ask me how I know..........

Yeah,I figured .This trans has been abused in the past and obviously wasnt fixed correctly, from what it sounds like.
I guess we will see how long it lasts. My car is my daily commuter,so it gets alot of miles(15-20,000 a year)

By the looks of the other parts I got with it,I am not surprised. It seems that I have gotten someones poor attempt at modding a B15 pedal for the B13/B13.
I will spare you guys the pics, but trust me this is some rigged up poorly modded parts.Looks like a monkey did the welding.
No way in hell I will put this in my car,so I converted the trans to cable for now.Eventually I will get a B15 pedal and mod it myself,so its not unsafe.
There was a good writeup here that I want to try anyway. It looks like a good way to mod it to work for the hydro conversion.
