Turn the input shaft with a rag and some pliers while going through the gears with the selector watching inside the axle holes for the diff to rotate in the correct direction and number of turns for the gear ratio. That should at least give you an idea that you're working with a good transmission. No guarantee though.

open it up and look for carnage, you might have to take it apart and see if there is an damage to the bell housing

Any issues ? Pop outs , grinds , shutters , whinning , ?
Also like ben said grab the shaft and check for side to side motion that could be a bad bearing .

Can't really tell without opening it, but like already stated, turn input shaft and check for play. Look in every hole you can, and see if theres any metal shavings in there. Try pulling out the drain plug, maybe neutral/reverse switches and see if you can spot any chunks of anything. Other than that, theres not much you can do. Just because the gears will turn by hand when its out of the car doesn't mean when they are put under load in the car that they will engage. (been there, done that)
