GTI-R Main Bolts Torque?
I know the torque ratings are different in the FSM for GTI-R vs DE, but I am wondering if using GTI-R main bolts in a DE/T block, should you use DE or GTI-R torque settings? Is the block and/or threads in the block any stronger in the GTI-R block or is it only the bolts the reason the FSM suggests a stronger torque rating?

I torqued my GTIR bolts to the same torque specs as the DE ones. Never had an issue. While they are stronger bolts than the DE/DET ones, they are the same size. Just means they will take more punishment before breaking or stretching. I remember seeing a thread a while back and torque is the same as the DE/DET

Again 15k miles on my built motor, no issues at all with the mains.

hmmm, I wonder then why the FSM suggests a higher torque rating for the GTI-R?

I was thinking best practice was to torque them to GTI-R specs, but I wasn't sure if the GTI-R block had something to do with the difference in torque rating. Perhaps a torque rating in between the two??

Shouldnt make a difference, the main caps and block are made of the same material and pretty much the same design except for the gtir block being slightly skinnier at the base.

Must be bolt strength differences then. I know I didnt have any issues with mine being torqued at 58 ft-lbs which is what i went to.

Id say torque to 70 ft-lbs and call it good as long as everything turns over smoothly. Must be just the difference in fastener strength.

Well, if you torqued them to 58 ft/lbs and are running the power you are, then I think I'll be fine with 58. No reason to overdo it. 58 is close to the low range of the GTI-R specs anyways.

Id say go to at least the low range of the gtir spec. 4-5 ft lbs isnt going to hurt anything.
